Why it matters
The producer
Angeline began with Courtney Benham in 1990 and remains centered on Pinot Noir. The winery has made California wines for more than 30 years and is produced at Martin Ray Winery in Santa Rosa. The standard bottle carries the broad California designation, while Reserve names three California regions and gives the same grape a deeper register.
Leslie Renaud and Raemy Paterson lead the current winemaking team. Their stated preference is varietal expression with minimal cellar handling, so Angeline's character comes through Pinot Noir and the work done around it, from vineyard sourcing to native fermentation.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
California is the geographic designation on the standard Pinot Noir, a wide label frame that does not name one vineyard region. Reserve narrows its map by combining fruit from Russian River Valley, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, and Carneros. The distinction changes how the range reads: the standard bottle carries wider California sourcing, while Reserve puts three named regions on the label and delivers a darker, more savory wine.
The clearest site markers are regional and agricultural. Angeline sources grapes from premium California vineyard sites and describes the farming as meticulous. No soil type or slope is attached to the wines, so place enters through the named regions and through the care given to the fruit.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The vineyard work begins with fruit from premium California sites and close attention to farming. In the cellar, Renaud and Paterson use native yeast instead of commercial strains, long cold soaks, open-top tanks, and hand punch-downs three times a day. Partial whole-cluster fermentation adds stems to part of the fermenting fruit, while minimal manipulation keeps the list of interventions short.
Those choices connect directly to the bottles. The standard wine carries earthy notes and grippy tannins; Reserve carries silky tannins, balanced acidity, and a lingering finish. The cellar is active, but it does not turn the grape into a different style.
Wines to know
The range in view
The 2022 Angeline California Pinot Noir is the broad, standard tier. It is dry, medium-bodied, and earthy, with black raspberry, fresh pomegranate juice, and wild blueberry set against sassafras, subtle licorice, and toasted oak. Grippy tannins give the fruit a firm edge, keeping the wine from reading as simple red fruit.
The 2022 Angeline Reserve Pinot Noir is the regional blend, with fruit from Russian River Valley, Green Valley of Russian River Valley, and Carneros. Its almost brooding colour leads into ripe plum, pluot, and golden cherry, then blueberry and savory coastal character. Soy, dried mushroom, and earth bring umami, while silky tannins and balanced acidity carry the wine to a lingering finish.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Choose the 2022 Angeline California Pinot Noir as the bottle to open first. Its broad California label, dry medium body, and lithe, lively feel put Pinot Noir's varietal character in plain view, while dark cherry, red berry, vanilla, earth, and grippy tannin keep the glass from becoming flat.
