Why it matters
The producer
Arilds Vingård sits on the south-facing slopes of Kullaberg, a rocky peninsula jutting into the Öresund in northwest Skåne, and at 38 hectares it is the largest wine estate in Sweden. Annette and Jonas Ivarsson built it from 5,000 vines planted in 2007, and the estate now carries roughly a third of Sweden's total commercial vine acreage.
The variety at the centre of everything is Solaris, a PIWI hybrid bred in Germany for cool, wet climates. It ripens reliably at 56 degrees north, where traditional Vitis vinifera varieties routinely fail to accumulate enough sugar before the season closes. Twenty hectares of Solaris are planted or in production. Alongside it grow Frühburgunder, Souvignier Gris, Cabernet Cortis, and several unnamed red PIWI varieties still in trial. The cellar adds nothing to correct for the climate: no chaptalization, no deacidification, no unnecessary additives. The variety selection does the work instead.

Where the wines begin
Kullaberg is a nature reserve of gneiss and granite, its south slopes angled toward the strait and sheltered from the worst of the northern weather. For Swedish viticulture, the location is unusually mild. The long summer daylight hours give the vines enough photosynthetic time to ripen, and the sea moderates temperature swings through harvest.
Sweden has no appellation system comparable to the French AOC or German Prädikat hierarchy. Wines from Arilds Vingård carry estate and variety names on the label: Kalles Kulle, Bubbel, Frühburgunder.

Vineyards and cellar
Solaris makes PIWI viticulture commercially coherent at this scale. The variety is resistant to fungal disease, so the estate avoids routine pesticide applications that conventional cool-climate viticulture requires. It ripens three to four weeks earlier than Pinot Noir, giving the cellar grapes with natural sugar levels high enough that chaptalization would add nothing. The decision to skip both chaptalization and deacidification is therefore a consequence of grape selection, not an ideological constraint grafted onto unsuitable varieties.
Fermentation uses both wild yeasts and inoculated cultures depending on the lot. The sparkling wines move through a gyropalate for riddling before disgorgement. The Frühburgunder and Cabernet Cortis reds are vinified for freshness rather than extraction, consistent with the short growing season and the light tannin architecture both varieties carry in cool years.

The range in view
The range builds upward from still whites through a sparkling tier to small-volume reds.
Kalles Kulle is the entry white, made from Solaris alone. The wine opens on pear and white peach, adds a thread of mint, and finishes with fine texture and clean acidity. It scored 90 points from Wineanorak in a 2026 tasting across a wide range of Swedish wines.

It is light and precise, and it demonstrates why the Ivarssons built 20 hectares of the variety on south-facing gneiss slopes in a country that, a generation ago, was not thought to grow wine at all.
