Why it matters

The producer

Elena Fucci makes one wine from one vineyard on a volcanic mountain in southern Italy. The estate sits at 600 metres on the upper slopes of Monte Vulture, a dormant volcano in northern Basilicata, and every bottle carries the same name: Titolo, an Aglianico del Vulture red from six hectares of old vines that her grandfather planted in 1960.

Elena was eighteen when she left a genetics and engineering degree in Pisa and returned to Basilicata to take over the property. She retrained as an enologist, graduated in 2000, and has made Titolo commercially since 2004. No second wine, no white, no rosé. The vineyard holds some of the oldest vines on Monte Vulture, many over seventy years. Titolo has won Gambero Rosso's Tre Bicchieri fifteen times.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Monte Vulture is a dormant volcano in the northernmost reaches of Basilicata, one of the least-visited regions in Italy. The Aglianico del Vulture DOC covers its slopes, and the appellation takes its name from the grape: Aglianico, a late-ripening red variety with high natural acidity and firm tannin that performs differently here than anywhere else in southern Italy.

At 600 metres, Elena's vineyard occupies the highest section of the mountain. The altitude extends the growing season by several weeks beyond lower parcels, keeps night temperatures cool through the ripening period, and allows Aglianico to develop flavour without losing its natural acidity. The result on the label is a wine that can carry far more age than most southern Italian reds: ten or more years for a serious vintage, with the mineral edge of volcanic soil throughout.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The vines are hand-harvested in late October, later than most of the region. Aglianico is among the last grapes to ripen in Italy, and at 600 metres the extra weeks of cool-night temperature allow the tannin to soften slightly before picking without losing acidity.

In the cellar, Titolo ages for twelve months in a mixed cooperage of 200-litre barriques and 500-litre tonneaux, split between 50% new wood and 50% second-passage barrels. The barrique and tonneaux combination gives more oxygen exposure than a single large cask would, which softens Aglianico's naturally grippy tannin across the ageing period. The 50% new wood adds spice without overwhelming the volcanic mineral character that the old vines and the soils supply.

Wines to know

The range in view

Titolo is the only wine. It is red, made entirely from Aglianico, and carries the Aglianico del Vulture DOC on the label. The appellation covers the volcanic slopes of Monte Vulture and sets Aglianico del Vulture apart from Aglianico grown elsewhere in Basilicata or in Campania's Taurasi zone.

The wine is built for ageing. Dark plum and dried cherry sit against an iron-edged mineral spine, with high natural acidity and tannin that is gripping in youth but resolves over time into a long, dry finish. There is no softening second label, no entry-level expression, and no vintage designed for early drinking. A young Titolo will show its edges; a bottle from five or more years back opens into something deeper and more layered, the fruit darker and the mineral more prominent.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Titolo is the only bottle. Choose a vintage with five or more years of age if one is available: the tannin has had time to integrate, the acidity is still present, and the volcanic mineral character has come forward rather than sitting behind the oak and fruit of youth. This is when the wine makes its full case for the mountain and the grape: dark fruit, iron-edged mineral, a firm but no longer harsh grip, and a finish that goes on longer than expected. If only a young vintage is available, decant it for two hours. It will show what it is becoming more clearly than what it is right now.
