Why it matters
The producer
Georges de Latour left the Dordogne in 1883, arrived in California, and spent the next seventeen years selling cream of tartar to the state's winemakers before buying land himself. Four acres in Rutherford in 1900. When his wife Fernande saw the property, she said "Quel beau lieu!" and the name followed. Georges was a chemist by training, and that training shaped the earliest decisions: he imported phylloxera-resistant rootstocks from Europe at a time when the American wine industry was still rebuilding from the pest, established a nursery in Paris to source vines, and by 1911 was distributing resistant stock to neighbouring Napa growers.
In 1938, Latour hired Andre Tchelistcheff. Tchelistcheff had trained in France and arrived at BV with methods that were not yet standard California practice: malolactic fermentation to soften acidity, French oak barrels for ageing. What he did at Beaulieu Vineyard became the technical template that winemakers across Napa later adopted. The Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon is the direct line from that period. The estate is now owned by Treasury Wine Estates.

Where the wines begin
Rutherford is a Napa Valley appellation on the valley floor between Oakville to the south and St. Helena to the north. Beaulieu Vineyard's numbered ranches run through this stretch, adjacent to Inglenook, with holdings that began at four acres and grew to more than 130. The valley floor position gives long growing-season warmth and the drainage and depth of alluvial soils that Cabernet Sauvignon can exploit for concentration and dark fruit. The Rutherford address shapes the wines directly: the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon label draws on these ranches, and the Rutherford Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon names the appellation on the label as the historic prestige anchor of the range.
The stone winery on the property fixes the physical continuity. The same building that McIntyre constructed in 1885 for a different owner is the building Latour bought in 1923 and where BV has worked ever since.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The ranch system runs to at least twelve numbered properties in Rutherford, all within the same appellation. The initial vine plantings used phylloxera-resistant European rootstocks, a decision that proved consequential when surrounding growers were replanting from pest damage. Tchelistcheff's cellar methods, introduced in 1938, set the ageing direction: malolactic fermentation to convert sharp malic acid to the softer lactic form, and French oak barrels, which added slow oxidation without the heavier vanilla and coconut character of American oak. Those methods remain part of how BV approaches the Rutherford Reserve tier.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range has three tiers. The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the entry wine, sourced from the Rutherford ranches, with a varietal-forward composition that runs mostly Cabernet Sauvignon and shifts slightly between vintages. Dark fruit with flinty mineral lift and firm tannin. The 2019 nose carried mild black cherry, black currant, violet, black licorice, and pencil shavings with flinty minerality; the 2023 vintage shows blackberry, ripe plum, cocoa bean, molasses, and chocolate covered cherries. Medium-full body across both.
The Tapestry Reserve is the Bordeaux-blend tier. Boysenberry and blackberry with vanilla oak on the 2017, which ran 86% Cabernet Sauvignon with Malbec, Petit Verdot, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc in supporting roles. The 2022 version raised Malbec to 14% and Petit Verdot to 10%, shifting the secondary fruit character further toward dark plum and spice. Smooth tannin, broader mouthfeel than the Napa Valley Cabernet. The 2022 Tapestry Reserve ranked No. 96 in the James Suckling Top 100 Wines USA 2025.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
The Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is the right first bottle. It is predominantly Cabernet Sauvignon from Rutherford ranches, with a small addition of Petite Sirah that darkens the tannin slightly without changing the grape's direction. The 2019 nose is the most instructive: black cherry, black currant, violet, black licorice, and pencil shavings sitting above flinty minerality. That pencil-shavings and mineral note is a Cabernet Sauvignon character that comes through clearly here, free of the vanilla oak that the Tapestry Reserve carries. Medium-full body, firm tannin, Rutherford valley-floor weight.
