Why it matters

The producer

Brothers Giovan Battista and Gaetano Bertani founded Bertani in 1857 and established the winery in Valpantena. Gaetano travelled to Burgundy, where he learned viticulture and winemaking techniques from Jules Guyot. Bertani is now part of Angelini Wines & Estates.

Its vineyard approach respects the genetic patrimony of the vines, protects biodiversity and uses non-invasive ecological practices. Bertani made its first official Amarone della Valpolicella Classico vintage with natural appassimento. After harvest, healthy, intact bunches are laid by hand, one by one, on wooden racks known as arele. They remain there for several months before pressing.

Wines to know

The range in view

Sereole Soave 2024 is the named white wine. The Sereole bottling is 100% Garganega from the Sereole vineyard, between Soave and Monteforte d’Alpone in the Soave Classico zone. It matures for four to five months in French-oak vats, followed by three months in bottle. Sereole has a deep straw-yellow colour, citrus and white-flower aromas, a rounded, complex palate and slight minerality.

Governo Sangiovese 2019 is the named red wine. Bertani Domains Governo is made from Sangiovese using a method in which 30% of the grapes dry naturally for three months after harvest. In December, the dried grapes are pressed and added to the remaining wine before barrel fermentation and five months of ageing. Its profile includes cassis, cherry, aromatic herbs and woody hints, with mid-palate richness and a savoury, balsamic finish.
