Why it matters

The producer

Bodega Carmen Rodriguez Mendez farms 16 hectares of ungrafted Tinta de Toro in Toro, a Denominación de Origen in Zamora province within Castilla y León. The vines growing on this land were never uprooted and regrafted onto American rootstocks. Most are over a century old, and they grow on their own roots, a physical fact that separates this property from the overwhelming majority of vineyards in Europe.

Bodega Carmen Rodriguez Mendez is the official name. The operation is small. Carodorum Selección Especial Reserva is a full-bodied red from old ungrafted vines aged two years in new French barriques.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Toro is an appellation most wine buyers encounter later rather than earlier in their Spanish wine education. It sits on a high plateau in Zamora province, roughly 60 kilometres west of Valladolid, at elevations between 620 and 750 metres above sea level. The climate is extreme by European standards: summers reach temperatures that can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, winters are cold, and annual rainfall is low. Grapes ripen fully but retain acidity from the altitude and the cold nights that follow hot days.

The appellation is built around Tinta de Toro, a local clone of Tempranillo that has adapted over centuries to these conditions. The grape produces deeply coloured, tannic, dark-fruited wine that reflects the heat and the age of the vines that carry it.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The ungrafted vines are the defining production fact. Ungrafted plants tend to produce smaller berries with thicker skins and more concentrated juice than grafted equivalents. Low yields from century-old vines push that concentration further, delivering deep colour, elevated tannin, and dark fruit intensity into the must.

In the cellar, Carodorum Selección Especial Reserva receives two years in new French barriques, 225-litre Bordeaux-format casks. New oak at that duration adds vanilla, cedar, and toasted wood character to the already dense fruit from the vineyard. The combination produces a wine built for ageing rather than early drinking.

Wines to know

The range in view

The only independently verified wine from this bodega is Carodorum Selección Especial Reserva. It is a red Reserva made from Tinta de Toro, aged two years in new French barriques, and positioned at the higher end of Toro pricing. The grape's low-yield, thick-skinned character on old ungrafted vines pushes the wine toward deep colour, concentrated dark fruit, and a tannin load that is substantial even by Toro standards. The new oak ageing adds weight and oak character rather than softening it.

The 2012 vintage was full-bodied with intense aromatic presence and considerable tannin. Whether the bodega produces other cuvées or range levels is not confirmed.
