Why it matters

The producer

Bodegas Alion makes one wine. It is a varietal Ribera del Duero red, 100% Tinto Fino, grown on 60 hectares of estate vineyard near the town of Peñafiel in Castilla y León. The Álvarez family, who own the neighbouring Vega Sicilia roughly 15 kilometres to the west, built Alion in 1986 as a separate project with a single condition attached: the wine could not be a secondary product. It had to stand on its own.

That instruction is still the operating brief. There is no second wine, no reserve tier, no rosé, no white. Every bottle that leaves Alion is the same wine, from the same 60 hectares, made under the same cellar approach. Annual production runs to approximately 300,000 bottles.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Ribera del Duero is a high plateau in north-central Spain, running east from Valladolid along the valley of the River Duero. Alion sits in the Valladolid section, east of Peñafiel, where the plateau sits at roughly 700 to 800 metres above sea level. That altitude gives the appellation its most defining climatic character: long cold winters and warm dry summers with significant temperature swings between day and night. On Tinto Fino, those swings preserve acidity and slow the ripening of tannin, producing wines that carry colour and depth at relatively high alcohol without losing their acid line.

The Valladolid-to-Soria highway runs north of the vineyards; the Duero river corridor runs south. The site puts Alion on the same plateau and in essentially the same physical address as Vega Sicilia, but different production choices produce a different wine.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The 60 hectares are planted exclusively to Tinto Fino. Vineyard work follows estate ownership throughout: Alion grows its own fruit rather than buying from growers. No parcel younger than ten years enters production.

Inside the cellar, Alion uses wooden fermentation vats rather than stainless steel, and replaces those vats on a five-year cycle. The replacement schedule keeps the wood fresh and prevents the accumulation of compounds that older tanks develop over decades. Ageing runs for 12 to 14 months in new French Bordeaux-format barrels, sourced from multiple cooperages rather than a single house. Multiple sources give the winemaking team flexibility across coopers and toast levels, vintage by vintage. Bottle ageing follows for a minimum of 15 months before release. Ageing produces a wine built around Tinto Fino fruit rather than cellar age.

Wines to know

The range in view

Alion produces one wine, bottled under the Ribera del Duero denominación de origen. It is a varietal red from 100% Tinto Fino, typically released at around 14.5% alcohol, and it follows a single cellar recipe: new French oak, then bottle rest, then market.

Because there is no range to navigate, the wine performs a single role: it is the complete expression of what the estate produces in a given year. Tinto Fino at this altitude gives dark fruit, a firm acid line, and tannins that run chalky rather than coarse. New French Bordeaux oak adds colour depth and a layer of cedar and dried herb without overwhelming the fruit character. Across the range of recent vintages, the wine is built for medium-term ageing, typically with a decade or more of development ahead of it on release, though accessible earlier than the long-aged Vega Sicilia style would be.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Alion is the only bottle to choose. There is no hierarchy to navigate. Take a recent vintage, the 2021 being a strong point of reference, and expect chalky tannins, a fresh acid line, dark cherry and blackcurrant, and the cedar warmth of new French oak behind the fruit. The wine delivers the character of the Ribera del Duero plateau in a modern, Tinto Fino-forward package: firm but not hard, concentrated but not heavy, and built to continue opening over eight to twelve years from vintage. Serve it with lamb or aged Castilian cheese to match the tannin grain.
