The producer
Bodegas Altanza was built in Fuenmayor in 1998 with a conviction that had to be earned rather than inherited: that a new Rioja estate with no dynastic backstory could make serious Tempranillo and price it fairly. The estate covers 300 hectares on the floor of Rioja Alta, 220 of them under vine, making it one of the larger single-owner properties in the appellation. The primary label is Lealtanza, a word pulled from Old Castilian meaning loyalty. That name was a statement of intent before the first vintage was in bottle.
The barrel hall holds 7,100 barrels, 95% of them French oak. For a winery that opened its doors in 1998, that inventory is a signal about ambition and about how seriously the cellar team planned for the medium term.

Where the wines begin
Fuenmayor sits in Rioja Alta, the western arm of the Rioja Denominación de Origen Calificada. Rioja Alta runs along the Ebro river valley between the Sierra de Cantabria to the north and the Iberan mountains to the south, with elevations that give the harvest a longer, cooler growing season than the warmer eastern zones of Rioja Baja. The clay and limestone soils in this part of the appellation slow ripening and hold acidity into the fruit. Tempranillo planted here tends toward concentrated dark cherry rather than the jammy, overripe register that flatter, hotter ground can produce. For Altanza, Fuenmayor is not incidental geography. It is the reason the Familia Reserva can carry 14% alcohol and still read as a wine with shape rather than weight.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The estate vineyard provides 60% of total fruit; the remaining 40% comes from outside growers under a controlled selection process. In the cellar, vertical hydraulic presses handle the grape crushing, preserving fruit integrity without excessive extraction. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks fitted with micro-oxygenation capability, which softens tannin and stabilises colour during fermentation without requiring extended maceration. The 7,100-barrel program, dominated by French oak at 95%, imparts fine-grained spice and vanilla to the wines without the harsher tannin character that American oak can bring. The result across the range is Tempranillo with a consistently ripe, smooth profile.

The range in view
Tempranillo is the grape across every tier. The Familia Reserva is the volume anchor: 100% Tempranillo, 14% ABV, classified under Rioja's Reserva rules, which require minimum oak and bottle ageing before release. Concentrated sun-dried cherry and strawberry on the nose give way to compote notes of black fruit, fig, and leather in the mouth, with notable palate volume.
Above Familia sits the Alta Expresión line, produced exclusively from estate vineyards. These wines push toward riper fruit expression and a silky mouthfeel. The Alta Expresión range comes exclusively from estate vines, without the blending influence of outside grapes.

A bottle to begin with
Lealtanza Familia Reserva 2019. This is 100% Tempranillo, Reserva-classified, from Fuenmayor in Rioja Alta. The nose delivers concentrated sun-dried cherry and strawberry. The palate adds compote of black fruit, fig, and leather with real body behind it. French oak from the 7,100-barrel program contributes spice without overwhelming the fruit. The 14% alcohol is present but not aggressive because the acidity from the clay-limestone soils gives the wine a frame.
