Why it matters
The producer
Bodegas Aster sits in Anguix, a village in the Burgos province stretch of Ribera del Duero, and it belongs to La Rioja Alta, one of the oldest and most traditional houses in Rioja. The two addresses are not obvious partners: Rioja and Ribera del Duero have distinct personalities, distinct soils, and different ideas about what Tempranillo should become in the glass. La Rioja Alta's decision to cross the provincial boundary was not opportunistic. It was patient.
The house bought Finca El Otero in Anguix in 1993, then did nothing commercial with it for seven years. Bodegas Aster did not exist as a winery entity until 2000. The gap was deliberate: the vineyard needed time before the wines were ready to carry a label.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Ribera del Duero is a long, high plateau appellation that follows the Duero river through Castilla y León. The Burgos province sits in the western reach of the appellation, at elevations that push 800 to 900 metres above sea level. Altitude gives the plateau its thermal character: hot days during the growing season, cold nights, and a continental climate with little moisture. Tinta del País responds to that cold-night shift by holding acidity even as the warm days push phenolic ripeness. Tempranillo from the plateau has firm colour, clear fruit definition, and the capacity for extended oak ageing.
Anguix is a village address within that landscape, and Finca El Otero is the estate that anchors Bodegas Aster to it. The Burgos portion of Ribera del Duero has historically been associated with the appellation's more structured, longer-lived wines, which aligns with La Rioja Alta's preference for traditional winemaking.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The base Aster Crianza draws from three parcels within Finca El Otero: Fuentecojo, La Cueva, and Otero Joven. The Crianza designation requires a minimum of two years of ageing, at least one of which must be in oak. For Bodegas Aster, the oak ageing adds the roasted, vanilla, and cedar notes that characterise the style, integrating with Tinta del País fruit to build the cocoa and coffee register that marks the wine on the palate.
El Espino follows a different path through the cellar. Where the Crianza and Finca El Otero bottlings are built for weight and integration, El Espino is made for freshness, with a cellar approach that preserves aromatic lift and keeps the tannins soft rather than building them toward a long ageing horizon.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range runs three expressions, all Tinta del País, from the same Anguix estate, and they divide into two temperaments.
The base Aster Crianza comes from three named plots: Fuentecojo, La Cueva, and Otero Joven. On the palate it shows plum and dark cherry against a background of cocoa, coffee, cedar, cardamom, and vanilla, with roasted oak character woven through the fruit. This is the traditional Ribera register: dark, warm, spiced, and oak-integrated.

A bottle to begin with
Start with El Espino. It is the clearest entry into what Tinta del País from Anguix can do when the cellar chooses freshness over age: intense ruby in the glass, soft tannins on the palate, and a clean, balanced finish that does not ask for years of patience. The fruit is clear, the body is present without being heavy, and the wine gives its character immediately. From there, the Aster Crianza shows what the same grape and the same estate produce when oak and time are the tools: deeper, warmer, and more complex, but built on the same Burgos fruit. El Espino is where the comparison begins.
