Why it matters

The producer

Bodegas Joaquín Rebolledo sits in the town of A Rúa, in the Valdeorras D.O. of northeastern Ourense province. Four generations of the same family have worked here, and the thing that most defines them is a decision made before most of the world was paying any attention to Galician white wine: they kept Godello when everyone else was pulling it out.

Valdeorras was not a fashionable appellation in the 1970s. The Sil river valley was producing cheap, high-volume whites, and Godello, a low-yielding variety prone to disease, was being replaced by easier grapes. The Rebolledo family went the other way. They farmed Godello on south-facing slate and clay at around 700 metres above the valley floor, year after year, without critical support or a waiting market. In 1993 their Godello entered the Zarcillo de Oro competition and won, the first Galician wine ever to take the prize. The appellation's modern reputation for serious white wine begins, in part, from that moment.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Valdeorras occupies a deep inland valley in northeastern Galicia, shaped by the Sil river as it cuts through the Ourense highlands. The Atlantic influence that defines coastal Galicia fades sharply here. Elevation and distance from the ocean produce a continental climate: warm, dry summers and cold winters, with daily temperature swings at harvest that regularly exceed twenty degrees Celsius.

That thermal range is central to the Godello character in the glass. Hot days build sugar and aroma intensity; cold nights lock in acidity and keep aromatic compounds intact. It is a dry white wine with real acid freshness alongside concentrated stone fruit. The same diurnal range sharpens the dark berry character of the Mencía and gives the wine its fruit-forward immediacy rather than the brooding depth found in cooler red-wine appellations.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The south-facing parcels at 700 metres are planted on shallow slate and clay, with granite beneath. Vine management on steep slate ground is labour-intensive: mechanisation is limited, yields are naturally low, and the canopy must be worked carefully to avoid sunburn while maximising the temperature differential between day and night.

The Godello is fermented at controlled low temperatures in stainless steel. No oak is used at any stage. After fermentation, the wine rests on its yeast sediment for three months before bottling. That lees contact builds a light textural roundness without adding weight or softening the acid line, and it extends the aromatic development so the stone fruit and citrus hold shape in the glass longer than a wine bottled immediately from tank.

Wines to know

The range in view

Two varietal wines anchor the range, both labelled under the Valdeorras D.O.

The Godello is a dry, unoaked white. It opens with stone fruit (peach, yellow pear) and citrus, with green herb and a light pineapple note. The three months on lees give it a slight textural grip without any heaviness, and the acid line stays clear and bright from start to finish. There is no residual sweetness. The wine is aromatic and direct.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with the Godello. Fermented in stainless steel on south-facing slate at 700 metres, rested three months on lees, bottled without oak: the wine is the direct product of the place and the family's four decades of commitment to the variety. It is dry, mineral, and stone-fruited, with bright acidity and a clean finish. A glass of it explains both the grape and the appellation in a way that no description does. This is also the wine that won the Zarcillo de Oro in 1993 when Godello had almost no audience, so it carries the argument about Valdeorras more plainly than anything else the house produces.
