The producer
Bodegas Riojanas makes Gran Reserva Tempranillo on a scale that most Rioja producers do not attempt. The bodega sits in Cenicero, a river-bend town in Rioja Alta where the Ebro slows through the western end of the appellation, and it has been making wine on Artacho family land since long before the formal founding date of 1890. A stone archway cut in 1799 still stands at the winery entrance: it was built to give access to the family vineyards, and it has outlasted every reorganisation since.
The two names that carry the bodega are Monte Real and Viña Albina. Both are Gran Reservas. Both age 34 to 40 months in oak. Both produce around 300,000 bottles a year. The range is built around depth of ageing and Tempranillo as the primary grape, not around single-parcel scarcity or low volume.

Where the wines begin
Cenicero sits in the western part of Rioja Alta, the cooler, wetter subzone of DOCa Rioja. The Ebro moderates temperatures here, and the Atlantic influence from the Cantabrian mountains brings rainfall that Rioja Baja, further east, does not receive. That extra moisture and lower heat sum suits Tempranillo, which keeps its acidity in cooler conditions and does not rush toward overripeness.
Rioja Alta has historically been the subzone associated with the longest-aged Rioja styles: Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva. The label says Gran Reserva; the law requires a minimum of 60 months total ageing for red wines at that level, with at least 18 months in oak. Bodegas Riojanas' 34 to 40 months in oak sits well above that legal floor.

Lighter in style and with higher acidity than Monte Real, it represents the fresher, more lifted end of the range.
