Why it matters

The producer

Bodegas Rosario Vera farms 47 acres of Tempranillo in Rioja Alavesa, the northern sub-region of Rioja DOCa that sits above the Ebro valley at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The estate is based in Laguardia. This is the newest project of Juan Gil Bodegas Familiares, a Spanish family wine group whose work spans more than a century and multiple denominations of origin across the country.

The winery takes its name from Rosario Vera, who co-founded the Gil family wine business generations ago. The tribute appears in the name above the door. The estate's young red wine is called Ai ama!, a Basque phrase meaning "mother," so the dedication appears on every bottle. That is a precise choice of language: Laguardia sits in the Basque Country region of Spain, and the Basque word is the correct one for this place.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Rioja Alavesa is a distinct geographic pocket inside the broader Rioja DOCa, separated from Rioja Alta and Rioja Oriental by the Ebro river to the south and bounded to the north by the Sierra Cantabria range. The mountains block Atlantic cold air from the north and channel it in controlled doses over the vineyards, moderating what would otherwise be a hotter, drier growing season. It brings cooler nights and a longer growing window than the valley floor further south, which pulls ripening out and preserves acidity in the grape skins.

All estate vines are dry-farmed, meaning no irrigation at any point in the growing season. Hand-harvesting follows, which allows picking decisions to be made vine by vine and parcel by parcel rather than mechanically across the whole estate at once. Given the elevation spread from 1,300 to 2,600 feet, different plots ripen at different rates, and hand-picking preserves the option to time each parcel's harvest separately.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Vines across the 47-acre estate range from 15 to 60 years old. Older vines in clay-limestone at elevation produce smaller yields with more concentrated berry flavour, which is one reason the estate's range focuses on Tempranillo as a single variety rather than blending across grapes or regions. The youngest vines at 15 years are approaching the age at which Tempranillo begins to express soil character as well as fruit character; the oldest at 60 years produce far less fruit per vine but what they give carries more depth and length.

Each parcel ferments separately in a small stainless-steel tank. This is a deliberate winemaking choice: separate fermentation allows the team to assess each plot's contribution before any blending decision, and stainless steel preserves the primary aromatic character of Tempranillo without adding oak flavour. No aging vessel or minimum aging time is confirmed for any bottling. Wines carry vegan certification, which means no animal-derived fining agents are used at any point in the process.

Wines to know

The range in view

Ai ama! is the confirmed wine in the range. It is a 100% Tempranillo from Rioja Alavesa vineyards, bottled as a vino tinto joven, the Spanish category for young red wine released without extended oak aging. The joven designation is not a concession to simplicity. In Rioja Alavesa at altitude, with parcel-separated fermentation in stainless steel and Tempranillo vines between 15 and 60 years old, a joven bottling carries the direct character of the grape and the site without the overlay of barrel aging.

The name is in Basque, but the wine is a Rioja DOCa-labelled red.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Ai ama! is the first bottle and, for now, the only confirmed bottle from the estate. It is 100% Tempranillo, a joven red from 47 acres of dry-farmed clay-limestone parcels in Rioja Alavesa, fermented parcel by parcel in stainless steel at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria. The wine gives red cherry fruit, bright acidity, soft tannin, and a clean mineral finish. No oak. No extended aging. What you taste is the sub-region and the grape, without layers of cellar work in between.
