Why it matters
The producer
Viña Cartín has farmed Albariño in the Salnés Valley since 1977, making it one of the longer-established family bodegas in Val do Salnés, the westernmost and coolest subzone of the Rías Baixas D.O. in Galicia, northwest Spain. Twenty hectares of parcels spread across the parish of Lantaño and neighbouring areas in the municipality of Meis, each farmed to a different pruning and trellising system suited to its altitude and orientation. No other grape variety appears anywhere in the range.
In 2003 the bodega moved into a renovated historic stone winery in Lantaño, choosing to refurbish an existing building rather than construct a new facility. The decision preserved the building's traditional character while installing modern cellar equipment inside. That building, and the five-label range it produces, represents the bodega today.

Where the wines begin
Val do Salnés sits at the western edge of Rías Baixas, where the ría de Arousa opens toward the Atlantic. Of the five recognised subzones in the D.O., this is the coolest and the most directly exposed to Atlantic sea breezes. Those breezes slow the ripening of Albariño through the growing season, which is why the grapes carry more aromatic complexity and higher natural acidity here than in the warmer inland subzones. The label consequence is Albariño that reads floral and mineral rather than rich and tropical.
Every Viña Cartín bottle carries the Rías Baixas D.O. designation and draws from this single subzone.

Vineyards and cellar
The 20 hectares are broken into multiple parcels around Lantaño, Meis, and the surrounding area, each managed with pruning and trellising systems matched to its altitude and sun exposure. The diversity of plot orientations means not all fruit ripens at the same moment or in the same way. Each parcel is harvested and fermented separately, a practice that lets the bodega read each plot as a distinct piece of the final blend.
In the cellar, fermentation happens in stainless steel at cool temperatures with selected yeasts, preserving the variety's natural floral and citrus character. Partial malolactic fermentation is used on certain labels to convert some of the grape's sharp malic acid into softer lactic acid, giving those wines a rounder mid-palate while keeping overall freshness intact. No oak or skin contact is used.

The range in view
Viña Cartín runs five labels from a single variety across a clear range of styles.
Viña Cartín is the main estate label, 100% Albariño from Val do Salnés. It shows straw yellow in the glass, with a nose of fresh floral aromas, pear, and apple. The palate has good depth and a balanced acid line with a persistent finish. This is the bodega's signature expression of the variety.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Start with the Viña Cartín Albariño. It carries the estate name, comes from the same Val do Salnés parcels as the rest of the range, and shows every defining quality of the bodega's work in a single bottle: the floral nose, the pear and apple fruit, the bright acidity kept in balance by the partial malolactic treatment on this label, and the mineral finish that comes from the granite underfoot. The wine is dry, fresh, and medium-bodied, with enough persistence on the finish to reward attention without demanding expertise. It is a direct, honest expression of what Atlantic Albariño does when handled with care.
