Why it matters

The producer

Bolgheri's community of producers drew Antonio Capaldo to the Tuscan coast. In 2016, he established Campo alle Comete, choosing an appellation where each vintner can express a terroir vision. The estate operates with Feudi di San Gregorio's philosophy and distribution network.

The vineyards cover 15 hectares and are planted at high density. The core range consists of red wines.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Castagneto Carducci locates the estate on coastal Maremma. Bolgheri DOC is the appellation used by the Bolgheri bottles, while Toscana IGT names a different geographic designation in the range. The place name locates the property; the appellation name classifies the wine. Within the DOC, Bolgheri Rosso and Bolgheri Superiore are separate category names.

Temperate conditions, constant sea breezes and intense light define the coastal setting. Coastal air can moderate heat and help grapes retain acidity during ripening, while bright conditions support full ripeness. For red wine, those effects can keep acidity present as grapes ripen.

Wines to know

The range in view

Stupore is the Bolgheri Rosso red, made from 50% Merlot, 20% Syrah, 20% Petit Verdot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. Plum and blackberry fill the profile, with a dry, rich palate, smooth tannins and a long aftertaste.

Torre 2021 is a red wine under Bolgheri Superiore, a separate category within the same DOC as Stupore's Bolgheri Rosso. Bolgheri Superiore is the other named Bolgheri category in the range.
