Why it matters

The producer

Can Bas Domini Vinicola farms a single property in Subirats, a municipality in the Penedès denomination of Barcelona province, and bottles every wine from grapes grown on its own land. The estate carries the name of Pere Bas, recorded as founder in 1668, though vines had been cultivated at the site for more than two thousand years before that document was signed. Today it operates under the legal name PERE VENTURA I FAMÍLIA SL.

The range splits into two lines. La Capella is the red flagship, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah named after the Romanesque chapel standing on the property. D'Origen is the second range: P9 is a Cabernet Sauvignon, P3 a white made from Xarel-lo. Both carry parcel numbers rather than vineyard names. The estate-grown, single-property model governs everything: no bought-in fruit, no négociant material.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

The Penedès denomination stretches inland from the Garraf coast between Barcelona and Tarragona, rising from warm Mediterranean lowlands to cooler elevated plateaux. Subirats sits in the middle zone, where Atlantic and Mediterranean air currents converge and summer heat is tempered by altitude. That position pulls toward ripe, fruit-forward reds capable of retaining enough acidity to finish clean, and toward whites with body and freshness rather than lightness alone.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

All grapes are grown on the estate's own land. The D'Origen P3 Xarel-lo is hand-picked and aged six months on yeast before bottling. That period on the lees adds weight to the mid-palate and rounds the acidity without masking it, producing the unctuous texture the wine is described as having. The D'Origen P9 Cabernet Sauvignon sees a brief period in French oak, which contributes to the spicy, balsamic character in the bouquet alongside the natural red-berry fruit of the grape. Exact oak duration is not confirmed from the estate's own pages.

La Capella blends Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah; grape proportions are not published. The estate describes its approach as balancing modern and traditional methods with sustainable land management, committed to working within the environmental codes applicable to the property.

Wines to know

The range in view

La Capella is the estate's most ambitious bottle: a Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah blend with a dense cherry robe carrying pomegranate and faint gold glints at the edge. The aromas layer freshly picked red fruit over vanilla, coffee, spice and cedar. On the palate it runs firm and velvety at once, with the kind of acidity that keeps the weight mobile and the fruit from reading as jammy. The finish is long. It is the wine that most directly draws on the property's depth and on the two grapes that have driven Penedès red production for decades.

D'Origen P9 is a varietal Cabernet Sauvignon, plum-coloured in the glass, with a clean and intense nose of fresh berry fruit over a spicy, balsamic base. The palate is milder than La Capella: sweet, soft tannins, a light build with good volume, and a fresh, long finish. Brief French oak aging contributes to the spice and base-note character.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with D'Origen P3 Xarel-lo. It is a 100% Xarel-lo, hand-picked and aged six months on yeast, and it is the wine in the range that most clearly belongs to its specific corner of Catalonia. Xarel-lo is a Catalan grape: it anchors white Penedès and is one of the three permitted varieties in Cava. Here it is bottled on its own, which means nothing dilutes the grape's natural texture. The palate is unctuous and light at once, with acidity that stays integrated rather than cutting, and a finish that refreshes.
