Why it matters

The producer

Cantina Colli Euganei is a cooperative of approximately 680 winegrowers based in Vò, a small town in the Padova province of the Veneto. Its members farm across the Euganean Hills Nature Reserve, a protected volcanic hill system that rises abruptly from the flat alluvial plain southwest of Padua. Most Veneto wine buyers know Prosecco and Pinot Grigio. The cooperative's focal grape is neither: it is Moscato Giallo, an aromatic white variety with a deep link to the volcanic soils of these hills, bottled under the Colli Euganei Fior d'Arancio DOCG.

The cooperative opened in Vò in 1949, formed by local winegrowers who wanted collective pressing and bottling capacity rather than selling all their fruit in bulk to larger merchants. The founding logic was practical: small hillside growers with fragmented volcanic parcels had little leverage individually.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

The Euganean Hills are an isolated volcanic massif, geologically distinct from every other part of the Veneto plain. They were formed by ancient volcanic and hydrothermal activity, and their soils carry basalt, trachyte, and clay mineral layers that bear no resemblance to the alluvial gravels and limestone of the surrounding lowlands. For Moscato Giallo, the grape's aromatic concentration in this zone is tied to the mineral composition and the heat retention of dark volcanic soils on south-facing slopes.

The Fior d'Arancio DOCG is geographically contained within the Euganean Hills Nature Reserve, the same protected area where the cooperative's 680 members farm their parcels. The denomination covers several styles of Moscato Giallo wine: still, sparkling, and passito. The Secco version, dry and aromatic, is the clearest expression of how the grape behaves on these soils without the sweetness or effervescence of other styles obscuring the volcanic character.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

With 680 members farming parcels across the Euganean Hills Nature Reserve, the cooperative works with fragmented fruit from many different vineyard holders rather than managing a single consolidated estate. Incoming grapes are sorted and processed centrally at the Vò cellar. The volume and the diversity of the member holdings mean that the cooperative's blending role is significant: the finished wine is a composite built from many small parcels across the volcanic hillside system.

The one confirmed cellar practice with direct wine consequence is the partial oak aging on the Rialto Merlot. Twenty percent of that wine is aged in large 2,000-litre oak barrels, the remaining eighty percent kept unoaked. Large-format barrels impart oxygen contact and a degree of integration without the strong vanilla or toast character of smaller casks. The Merlot has enough rounding to avoid rawness without the grape's softness being buried under wood. The Fior d'Arancio Secco is made without oak, preserving the aromatic directness that is the point of the wine.

Wines to know

The range in view

The cooperative produces three confirmed wines across two label tiers.

Fior d'Arancio DOCG Secco is the range flagship and the grape-specific highlight. Moscato Giallo on volcanic soils fermented dry: the wine is pale yellow with faint golden hues, with a nose that is characteristic and intense rather than generically floral or tropical. The palate is dry and persistent, with a freshness that recalls the skin and juice of fresh grape rather than confection or stone fruit. The DOCG classification sets stricter production requirements than the underlying Colli Euganei DOC and signals the denomination's formal endorsement of this style as the appellation's white expression.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with the Fior d'Arancio DOCG Secco. It is a dry white wine made from Moscato Giallo grapes grown on the volcanic soils of the Euganean Hills, fermented to dryness and bottled under the denomination's dedicated DOCG classification. The colour is pale yellow with light golden edges. The nose is intense and directly characteristic of the grape on this terrain: aromatic, fresh, floral without sweetness. The palate is dry and persistent, with a grape-like freshness that holds through a long finish. No oak, no residual sugar, no confection.
