Why it matters

The producer

Casa Mariol makes single-variety wines and vermouths from the inland heat of Terra Alta, a DO tucked into southern Catalonia where most producers have historically sold Garnacha in bulk rather than bottling it themselves. The Vaquer siblings changed that calculus at their family estate in Batea. Josep Maria handles the winemaking, Miquel Àngel and Marta work alongside him, and the three of them have built a range that is immediately recognisable on a shelf because of its design: German art director Mirko Borsche created the bottle aesthetic, giving Casa Mariol a visual clarity that is rare in this part of Spain.

The estate's Garnatxa Blanca and Garnatxa Negra carry organic certification. Every wine and vermouth in the portfolio has been vegan certified since 2019, which means no fining agents of animal origin at any stage of production. An in-house laboratory handles traceability and quality analysis across the range.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Terra Alta sits at the southern edge of Catalonia, far enough inland that the coast's moderating influence fades and the growing season turns hot and dry. Batea is near the centre of the DO, at altitude, on soils that are predominantly calcareous. Two winds cross the vineyards: the cierzo, a dry northerly that arrives from the Ebro valley and keeps humidity low, and the garbí, a moist southeasterly that tempers the heat in warmer periods. Together they push vines toward thick skins and concentrated fruit rather than broad, flabby ripeness.

Calcareous soils drain quickly and limit vine vigour, which tends to reduce yields and push intensity into the grape rather than volume. For Samsó (Carignan), the same combination produces dark fruit and firm acidity. Terra Alta wines carry DO status on the label, and Garnacha in its white and black expressions is the appellation's signature grape.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Casa Mariol farms its 50 estate hectares under sustainable principles across the range, with the Garnatxa Blanca and Garnatxa Negra parcels certified organic. Calcareous soils and low rainfall reduce the need for chemical inputs. The two winds limit humidity, which keeps fungal pressure down in the vineyard.

In the cellar, the Samsó Crianza receives ageing in American oak before a period of bottle rest prior to release. The oak contact gives the wine toasted wood character and softens the tannins that Carignan naturally carries. The Garnatxa Blanca and Garnatxa Negra wines are made to organic standards with no animal-derived fining agents. The White Vermouth is produced from a Macabeo base, flavoured with botanicals native to Terra Alta, and released without ageing to preserve the fresh aromatic character of the herbs.

Wines to know

The range in view

The range divides into wines and vermouths, both built around single varieties or single-botanical profiles.

The Garnatxa Blanca is a dry white wine from certified organic white Garnacha. White Garnacha in Terra Alta tends toward a broad, full-bodied palate with stone fruit, low-to-moderate acidity, and good weight. The organic farming and the calcareous soils keep the fruit defined without adding richness beyond what the grape and site produce.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with the Samsó Crianza. Samsó is the Catalan name for Carignan, a grape that most drinkers know only from cheap southern French blends. In Terra Alta, farmed on calcareous soils and aged in American oak before release, it produces something more considered: dark fruit, toasted wood, soft tannins, and the ripe acidity that the cierzo wind preserves through the growing season. The bottle gives a direct read on what Terra Alta's conditions do to a red grape with genuine character, and it shows what Casa Mariol does in the cellar with oak and time. It is the wine in the range with the clearest structural arc from vineyard to glass.
