Why it matters
The producer
Château Calon-Ségur dates back to the 12th century and is one of Bordeaux's oldest wine producers. After the 2012 acquisition, the vineyard was restructured, a new vathouse was built, and the ageing cellar was enlarged. The work was in place from 2016. Fermentation now takes place in 70 conical stainless steel tanks, with different volumes allowing parcel by parcel vinification.

Where the wines begin
Saint-Estèphe is the northernmost classified growth area in the Médoc. Calon-Ségur's vineyard lies on hilly slopes with thick gravel and large pebbles over clay. Gravel drains excess water, while clay holds moisture. In red Bordeaux, that combination can support ripening through dry weather while preserving the firmness Cabernet Sauvignon brings to the blend.

The range in view
The estate's Grand Vin is Château Calon-Ségur, a red Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Production averages close to 20,000 cases each year. The main wine ages in 100% new oak for 20 months. New oak can add toast and spice, while the long ageing allows oxygen to soften tannin. The 2023 vintage is a red wine under the Haut-Médoc appellation.
