Why it matters
The producer
Château Maris began in 1997, when Robert Eden and Kevin Parker acquired a vineyard whose soil had been heavily damaged by pesticide use. Eden, a British-born pioneer of organic and biodynamic viticulture in the Languedoc, responded with a large composting programme. Parker remains co-proprietor and is also CEO of Sustainable Insight Capital Management.
The estate's wines come from Mediterranean red grapes, led by Syrah, Grenache and Carignan. That grape palette gives Château Maris a clear regional centre, while the range also includes Natural Selection, an orange wine made from Muscat. Farming, building and bottle style all sit inside the same long shift away from chemically managed land.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Félines-Minervois is the village address, while Minervois La Livinière is the AOC appellation that frames the estate's wines. The distinction matters on the label: one names the local place, the other names the regulated wine area. Château Maris farms 32 hectares in small plots among natural areas, following well-exposed hillsides. The remaining land within the 45-hectare estate gives the vines a setting that includes uncultivated ground as well as vineyard rows.
The estate's soil story starts with damage. When Eden took over, excessive pesticide use had removed much of the life from the soil. He applied 20 tons of fertiliser per hectare, made from twice that amount of manure, to rebuild the ground through intensive composting.

Vineyards and cellar
The vineyard combines Mediterranean grapes with a farming system that has stayed chemical-free for more than two decades. Syrah, Grenache and Carignan form the red-wine core, giving the estate access to dark fruit, spice and warm-climate weight without reducing the range to a single grape variety.
The cellar's hemp walls and green roof are practical physical choices, not decorative details. They make the building part of the same environmental programme as the vineyard. In the range, that approach appears beside a different kind of cellar decision: Natural Selection is bottled as an unfined, unfiltered Muscat orange wine in recycled glass.
Wines to know
The range in view
La Touge is the clearest red reference. It shows a medium purple colour and an aroma profile built around jammy blackberry, bramble and blueberry, with black cherry, vanilla, cedar and chocolate adding darker, sweeter and wood-spice notes. The wine sits inside the estate's Syrah, Grenache and Carignan landscape, though its precise blend is not fixed here.
Natural Selection occupies a separate place in the range. It is a Muscat orange wine, unfined and unfiltered, bottled in recycled glass. Muscat brings an aromatic grape character, while the orange-wine format moves the colour and mouthfeel away from the deep purple, dark-fruited register of La Touge. These two bottles show the range's breadth: Mediterranean red wine at one end, skin-contact white grape at the other.

A bottle to begin with
Start with La Touge. It is Château Maris's most direct red-wine reference, and its medium purple colour, jammy blackberry, bramble, blueberry, black cherry, vanilla, cedar and chocolate aromas make the estate's Mediterranean direction immediately legible. Acidity, body and tannin carry the wine beyond a simple fruit profile, giving the dark flavours shape through the mouth and into the finish.
