The producer
In 2010, Château Pontet-Canet became the first major Bordeaux producer to earn official Agence Bio organic certification. That date gives the estate a concrete modern character: farming sits at the centre of the wine, alongside a Pauillac name and a Fifth Growth classification.
The estate is in the commune and appellation of Pauillac, where Cabernet Sauvignon leads the 2020 blend. Merlot supplies almost a third of that vintage, while Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot complete the four grape varieties. The label therefore joins a classified Bordeaux estate to a Cabernet-led red whose fruit, acidity and tannin are carried through a mixed-vessel cellar.

Where the wines begin
Pauillac places Pontet-Canet on Bordeaux's Left Bank, inside an appellation associated here with Cabernet Sauvignon. In the 2020 wine, that grape makes up 60% of the blend, with Merlot at 32%. The combination brings blackcurrant and cassis fruit, a full palate and fresh acidity, while the smaller Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot portions add herbal, spicy and darker-fruited notes.
The vineyard covers 81 hectares. Its size gives the estate a substantial block of Pauillac vines, while the bottle remains vintage-specific: the 2020 proportions should not be applied automatically to every year.

The estate's biodynamic approach begins with attention to the vineyard rather than a single cellar technique. Its general maturation pattern uses 50% new casks, 10% to 15% one-wine casks and 30% to 40% amphora or concrete. New oak contributes the toasted register found in the 2020 nose, while the amphora and concrete portion keeps the wine's maturation from being defined by oak alone.
For 2020, the split is exact: 50% new oak, 35% concrete amphora and 15% previously used barrels. The wine's rich, full and creamy palate sits beside fresh acidity and tannins that merge into a rounded, upright feel. The vessels give the Cabernet-led fruit room to remain dark and ripe without losing its lift.

The range in view
The 2020 Château Pontet-Canet is a Pauillac red built around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 32% Merlot, with 4% Cabernet Franc and 4% Petit Verdot. It is a deep, full-bodied style with blackcurrant, blackberry and blue fruit at its centre, supported by peony, liquorice, spice and peppery herbs.
Its range position is expressed through the bottle's balance of power and softness. The wine is rich, opulent and ripe, with a creamy middle, fresh acidity and tannins without hard edges. New oak, concrete amphora and used barrels divide the maturation between toast, fruit and a more open vessel effect. Smoke, black fruit and mint carry the finish.
