Why it matters
The producer
Château Vartely is a Moldovan winery and tourism destination on a hill near Orhei. Its own vineyards lie in the Codru and Valul lui Traian protected geographical indication areas, while the winery runs a closed cycle from estate grape growing through processing, maturation and bottling.
Individo is the house range built around selective combinations of established grape varieties. The white wines pair Pinot Gris with Chardonnay, Traminer with Sauvignon Blanc, and Fetească Regală with Riesling. Winemaker Arcadie Fosnea describes the house style as fruit forward, with greater phenolic ripeness than classic French wines.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
The winery sits on a hill near the Moldovan town of Orhei, at 170/B Eliberarii Street. Orhei supplies the local setting for both the cellar and the tourism complex, while the vineyard work reaches into two separate protected geographical indication areas.
Codru and Valul lui Traian divide the estate's grape growing by region and colour. White wines come from the central Codru area, while the southern Valul lui Traian area supplies the red wine program.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The winery's closed production cycle covers cultivation of its own grapes, processing, wine maturation, bottling and supply to the market. German and Italian equipment gives the cellar a processing capacity of 4000 tonnes of grapes per season.
The red wines are aged in oak. Taraboste uses new barrels, with the estate working principally with Hungarian and French oak and some American oak. New oak gives wine more wood derived flavour and oxygen exposure during ageing, while older barrels contribute less overt oak character.
Wines to know
The range in view
Individo is organized around dry white blends, with each bottle pairing two grape varieties. Individo Pinot Gris Chardonnay contains 58% Pinot Gris and 42% Chardonnay. The producer describes it as having moderate acidity and a long aftertaste.
Individo Traminer Sauvignon Blanc contains 55% Traminer and 45% Sauvignon Blanc, with fruit from the Codru region. Individo Fetească Regală Riesling contains 55% Fetească Regală and 45% Riesling, with fruit from vineyards in Codru. The producer associates the latter wine with delicate wildflower aromas and a full bodied profile.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Choose Individo Pinot Gris Chardonnay 2021. It is the Individo bottle built from Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, presented as a dry white wine. The other listed Individo wines pair Traminer with Sauvignon Blanc or Fetească Regală with Riesling, so this bottle gives the range's three pairings a clear starting point through its own combination of grapes.
