Why it matters

The producer

Clos de Tart is a Pinot Noir domaine in Morey-Saint-Denis, built around a vineyard that has never been divided. The estate's name also belongs to its flagship Grand Cru monopole wine, while monopole means one producer controls the entire named vineyard.

Its ownership history runs from Claude Marey's purchase from the Church in 1791 to Henri Mommessin's sole bid at auction in 1932 and the Pinault family's acquisition in 2018. The Mommessin family held the estate from 1932 until 2018.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Morey-Saint-Denis is a Burgundy village in the Côte de Nuits. Grand Cru is Burgundy's highest vineyard classification, while monopole identifies a vineyard controlled by one domaine. Clos de Tart keeps one named vineyard under that single control.

Wines to know

The range in view

The range contains three Pinot Noir wines. Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole is the flagship, sourced from vines averaging 60 years old. La Forge de Tart Premier Cru comes from younger vines approximately 20 years old and offers earlier drinking pleasure. Morey-Saint-Denis is the village wine.

Clos de Tart Grand Cru Monopole is aged in oak for 18 to 24 months, with 50 to 75 percent new oak. The 2022 vintage has velvet tannins and a fine-grained, silky feel, with immediate approachability and more than 15 years of ageing potential.
