The producer
De Krans began its Portuguese focus with an accident. In 1973, vines ordered as Shiraz arrived as Tinta Barocca, giving Calitzdorp its first Portuguese grape planting. Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Souzão followed from 1985, and the cellar now uses those grapes in both dry wines and drier traditional port-style wines.
Cape Vintage Reserve 2021 sits at the fortified end of the range. It blends 71% Touriga Nacional, 23% Tinta Roriz and 6% Tinta Barocca, then ferments spontaneously, is fortified, and matures for 20 months in large vats. The bottle connects the accidental first planting with the cellar's current Portuguese focus.

Where the wines begin
De Krans is in the upper reaches of the Gamka River Valley, at Calitzdorp in the Klein Karoo. Calitzdorp is the useful place name to carry from label to glass, followed by the grape or style named on the bottle. The location gives the range a clear South African setting while the Portuguese varieties distinguish one bottle from another.
No broader legal appellation, village hierarchy or named sub-region is supplied here. The useful label reading stays close to the estate: Calitzdorp, Portuguese grapes, and a choice between dry wine and fortified port-style wine.

Vineyards and cellar
De Krans reports 40 hectares under vine. The planting list is unusually specific: Tinta Barocca, Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Amarela and Souzão. Those grapes support dry red and white wines as well as port-style bottles, so the vineyard is connected to several wine forms rather than one house style.
Cape Vintage Reserve 2021 follows a clear cellar sequence. The three Portuguese varieties ferment spontaneously, fermentation is stopped by fortification, and the wine then spends 20 months in large vats. That combination gives the bottle a long maturation period.

The range in view
The range begins with port-style wines made only from traditional Portuguese varieties. De Krans describes them as drier and traditional in style, so the category is fortified but does not point toward the heaviest possible sweetness. The bottle style is defined by grape choice, added spirit and a drier finish.
The dry range includes red and white wines made from Portuguese varieties. Dry Touriga Nacional is the clearest single-variety example, giving the grape a red-wine setting instead of the fortified format. De Krans also says it was South Africa's first producer of dry Touriga Nacional, Pink Port-style wine and Moscato perlé.
