The producer
Diemersdal sits on the hills above Durbanville, a wine district that begins where suburban Cape Town runs out and the Atlantic wind takes over. The estate is one of the oldest continuously farmed properties in South Africa, with records reaching back to 1698 and Louw family ownership stretching from 1885 to the present sixth generation. What makes Diemersdal concrete rather than merely historic is what Thys Louw does with the same Sauvignon Blanc parcels: two bottlings, Eight Rows and Winter Ferment, built from identical dryland vines on granite-clay soil but separated by entirely different fermentation calendars, yeasts, and cellar choices. The wines land in the glass as noticeably different things.
The estate declared itself a wine estate under South African law in 1979, releasing its first label, the Diemersdal Private Collection, that year. Before that, the family farmed the land for nearly a century without commercial bottling under its own name.

Where the wines begin
Durbanville sits north of Cape Town on a series of rounded hills, close enough to the Atlantic that afternoon sea mist rolls in daily from Table Bay. That mist is the governing fact of the vineyard climate. It arrives each afternoon, drops temperatures, and slows the final weeks of ripening. For Sauvignon Blanc, Atlantic cooling contributes to the character of the wines: the grape retains its aromatic compounds and natural acidity rather than accelerating into heavy, flat fruit.

Vineyards and cellar
The Eight Rows parcels carry the oldest Sauvignon Blanc on the estate, 29-year-old vines yielding 4 tonnes per hectare under dryland conditions. Grapes are hand-harvested at night, which keeps fruit temperatures low during picking and preserves aromatic volatiles. After harvest, the grapes spend 8 hours in skin contact before pressing, a brief maceration that extracts texture and phenolic grip without adding colour or tannin. Fermentation uses Vin7 yeast and the wine spends 5 months on lees before bottling. The finished wine shows stony minerals with herb-inflected guava and Bosc pear.
The Sauvignon Blanc plantings draw on three clones: 315, 316, and Weerstalsle, a deliberate multi-clone planting.

The range in view
The range is built around three tiers, all anchored in Sauvignon Blanc.
Eight Rows is the premium single-site bottling, made only from the old dry-farmed parcels at 4 tonnes per hectare. It is the most vineyard-specific wine on the list: low yields, night harvest, brief skin contact, and restrained lees work keep the emphasis on the granite-clay parcel rather than cellar technique. The 2022 vintage was dense, with stony minerals carrying herb-inflected guava and Bosc pear. The palate is taut rather than round.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Start with Eight Rows. It is made from the estate's oldest dry-farmed Sauvignon Blanc vines, harvested at night and fermented with minimal intervention, and it shows most directly what the Durbanville granite-clay soils give the grape: stony mineral grip, herb-inflected stone fruit, firm acidity, and a dense palate that holds its shape for several years. There is no oak and no residual sweetness. The wine scored 92 points in 2022. Once you know Eight Rows, Winter Ferment makes immediate sense as its opposite: same hill, different calendar, different texture, different character.
