Why it matters

The producer

Henri Carrette bought vineyard land in Vergisson in 1980 while working as a farmer-sharecropper. His son Jean-Michel later built the winery to its present size, and estate bottling began. The change moved the family from tending vines toward presenting its own wines under the Domaine Carrette name.

Today, Hervé Carrette works in the vineyard and his wife Nathalie Carrette, an oenologist, directs cellar operations. Their division of work joins soil-focused cultivation with hand harvesting, native yeast fermentation and lees ageing. The bottles carry the range of a Vergisson domaine, with Pouilly-Fuissé as its central appellation and Saint-Véran and Mâcon wines providing different readings of the surrounding Mâconnais.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Vergisson lies at the base of Solutré in the Mâconnais, and the domaine's 40 plots spread its work across several named appellations. Pouilly-Fuissé is the broad central expression, Saint-Véran adds a neighbouring appellation, and Mâcon Milly-Lamartine occupies a lighter place in the range. The labels therefore carry both a shared regional setting and distinct bottle roles.

The recurring stony notes in Pouilly-Fuissé, including crushed-stone aromas in the 2019 vintage, make the place legible in the glass. Mâcon Milly-Lamartine shifts toward ripe citrus, stone fruit and white flowers on a lighter to medium-bodied palate.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The domaine uses organic protective products and soil-focused cultivation in the vineyard. Grapes are hand-harvested, then given a cold soak and gentle pressing in the cellar. Those steps are used to bring out clear fruit aromas, which appear in the ripe apple and floral notes of Pouilly-Fuissé 2021.

Fermentation happens spontaneously with native yeasts, followed by ageing on lees. The approach keeps cellar intervention tied to the fruit and parcel work. Ronchevat takes a different path within the range, ageing for 10 to 12 months in oak with 10 percent new wood. Its ripe peach and mango sit beside toasted bread, fresh butter and spice.

Wines to know

The range in view

Pouilly-Fuissé 2021 is the central appellation wine, with lively movement, stony mineral notes, floral character and ripe apple. The 2019 vintage carries the same mineral direction through crushed-stone aroma and a vivacious profile. These bottles set the estate's main register around freshness, stone and clear fruit.

Pouilly-Fuissé Ronchevat comes from old vines aged 35 to 65 years. Its 10 to 12 months in oak, with 10 percent new wood, place ripe peach and mango beside toasted bread, fresh butter and spice. It is the more oak-marked and fuller-flavoured Pouilly-Fuissé in the documented range.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Pouilly-Fuissé 2021 is the bottle to open first. It holds the estate's central appellation and combines lively energy with stony mineral notes, floral detail and ripe apple fruit. Cold soaking and gentle pressing are used to draw clear fruit aromas, while native yeast fermentation belongs to the domaine's cellar method.
