The producer
In 2009, Domaine Gustave Lorentz converted to organic viticulture. All wines from its own vineyards have been certified organic from the 2012 vintage onward. The house is based in Bergheim and links grape variety, terroir and climate in its winemaking philosophy. Its Grand Cru holdings include Altenberg de Bergheim and Kanzlerberg.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Altenberg de Bergheim extends from 220 to 320 metres on limestone and marl. Kanzlerberg sits at 250 metres on grey and black gypsum marl from Keuper and Muschelkalk limestone. Limestone and marl differ in drainage and water retention, while altitude can slow ripening and preserve acidity as fruit maturity develops. Kanzlerberg was first mentioned in 1312 by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The range in view
Grand Cru Riesling is the named Grand Cru wine in the range. It shows citrus fruit and a touch of minerality, with well balanced acidity and a slightly savoury finish. Classic vintages can age 10 to 15 years, while great vintages can age 20 to 30 years. The range combines own vineyard wines with a substantial purchased grape model.
