Why it matters

The producer

Juan M. Palomar founded Dominio Buenavista in 1990. The first vines came in 1992, grafted with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay material brought from Napa Valley in California. The estate describes its wines as estate grown and estate produced.

Architect Eduardo Canals designed and directed the first construction phase of the winery, begun in 1996 and completed in 1999. The facilities expanded in 2004 with a larger vinification area and new ageing rooms.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

The winery stands in the municipality of Ugíjar. The estate vineyards rise above 2,500 feet and receive warm sunny days with cool nights. The site is close to the sea and sits at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada.

Mediterranean night breezes cool the vines during hot summers and delay ripening. Warm days encourage grape ripening, while cooler nights slow the process and help preserve acidity. The vineyard climate is defined by heat, night cooling and a longer ripening pattern.

Wines to know
