Why it matters

The producer

Finca Río Negro began with a vineyard plot so small it measured only 0.6 hectares. José Manuel Fuentes planted it in 1998 as part of a return to his origins, testing what vines could do on a high site where the project had no established history to follow. That experiment became a family-owned winery in Cogolludo.

The first Finca Río Negro 2007 vintage was released in January 2010. The range now includes a four-variety flagship red, the altitude-named 992 bottling and Gewürztraminer. Wines are marketed in more than 20 countries, while the estate remains tied to its planted area, its altitude and its separate plots.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

The estate belongs to Cogolludo in Guadalajara province, beside the Central System, the Henares river basin and the gateway to Sierra Norte Natural Park. DOP Río Negro gives this setting a protected geographical name, covering Cogolludo, San Andrés and Membrillera. The wines therefore carry a defined Guadalajara place instead of a broad regional address alone.

The vineyard includes 32 hectares of red varieties and 10 hectares of white varieties. That split helps explain the range: the estate can produce a blended red core while giving Gewürztraminer enough planted ground to become a distinct white expression.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The vineyard is managed through mechanical shredding between the vines, avoiding herbicides, while fertilisation uses sheep-derived organic matter. Pruning is delayed until March, which postpones budbreak and reduces exposure to late frosts. These are calendar and soil-management choices with direct consequences for vine growth and spring risk.

Harvest is entirely by hand and generally takes place well into October. Crates hold no more than 18 kilograms, limiting crushing and helping bunches reach the cellar intact. Rapid grape reception and controlled fermentation then preserve the condition of the fruit as it moves from the 30 plots into wine.

Wines to know

The range in view

Finca Río Negro is the flagship red, a blend made from four varieties. Its place in the range comes from combination and ageing, giving the estate a red wine built from several grapes rather than a single-variety reading of the vineyard.

992 is the more parcel-focused bottling. The 2023 wine is a blend with barrel maturation, and its name records the 992-metre elevation reached by the parcel used for it. The label links a specific height to a specific wine, while the barrel work marks a different cellar position within the range.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with Finca Río Negro Gewürztraminer. It places the grape name clearly on the label and gives the glass a complete sequence: white rose and Muscat-like perfume, apple and citrus, tropical fruit, fresh acidity and a textured finish shaped by lees ageing. The wine introduces the estate through a white variety grown within its high-altitude vineyard system, with enough aromatic detail to make the producer’s range immediately legible.
