Why it matters
The producer
Finca Sophenia is an estate in Gualtallary whose wines come from one vineyard. Roberto Luka founded the producer and was among the first people to plant vines in Gualtallary, when the land was still largely unknown for wine.
The vineyards are farmed with sustainable and organic practices. Agronomic management focuses on natural balance and the expression of individual parcels. Since 2021, Joaquin Martin has served as winemaker and manager of the winery and vineyards. In the cellar, the stated approach is minimal intervention with maximum attention, preserving the conditions created in the vineyard.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Gualtallary is a district in Tupungato, within Mendoza's Uco Valley. Its sandy, rocky soil has strong natural drainage. Excess water moves away from the roots instead of pooling, a condition that generally supports more controlled vine growth and helps prevent a heavy, soft palate.
The place is therefore present through the ground as well as the address. Malbec and Sauvignon Blanc receive the site's dry, free draining foundation before fermentation and ageing shape the finished wines.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Finca Sophenia manages the vineyard with a focus on natural balance, sustainability and the expression of each parcel. The cellar aims to reflect the work already completed in the vineyard and preserve the site's natural conditions. Freshness, balance, texture and respect for the grape guide the technical choices.
Sophenia Synthesis Malbec ferments with indigenous yeasts at controlled temperatures. Post fermentation maceration is adjusted through tasting. The wine then ages in French oak barrels for 14 months. The oak contributes smoke, tobacco and mocha notes, while the fermentation and maceration decisions keep the grape at the centre of the wine.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range has two contrasting formats. Sophenia Synthesis Malbec 2021 is the red wine, a varietal Malbec aged in French oak. Finca Sophenia Karma Pet Nat 2025 is the sparkling wine, made from Sauvignon Blanc.
Synthesis places Malbec in a still red wine with oak ageing. Karma changes both the grape and the format, moving to Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wine. The bottles therefore present two distinct expressions from the producer's range.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
Choose Sophenia Synthesis Malbec first. It is the varietal Malbec red, so the bottle keeps the focus on one grape and the producer's still wine style. Karma Pet Nat moves to Sauvignon Blanc and sparkling wine, while Synthesis gives Malbec the first place in the tasting sequence.
