The producer
Frankland Estate sits in the Frankland River sub-region of Western Australia's Great Southern, far enough inland and far enough south that the growing season stays long and cool. The estate began as a wool farm in 1974. The same family held the land through that phase and into wine growing, and the organic certification the estate earned in 2009 connects both periods: a property that already understood working with rather than against the land.
The wines carry two names. Isolation Ridge is the single-vineyard label for Riesling, naming the parcel rather than the region or the range position. The estate range covers Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, and two premium red blends, SmithCullam and Olmo's Reward. The cellar goal across all of them is aromatic and flavour purity, which in practice means avoiding the extraction, new-oak weight, and alcohol richness that warmer Australian regions tend to favour.

Where the wines begin
The Great Southern is Western Australia's largest wine region, a broad arc of land in the state's south-western corner. Frankland River is one of five sub-regions within it, positioned inland where maritime influence is present but moderated by distance. This climate allows a long, slow ripening season: grapes accumulate flavour without losing acidity, and the cool nights keep aromatics intact.
For Riesling, the variety can reach full aromatic development and still carry the high acidity that keeps it alive in the glass and in the bottle. For Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon, the cool-climate register shows up in the tannin texture and the aromatic lift rather than in sheer fruit weight. The wines label as Western Australia or Great Southern, situating them within a region that has produced serious still wines for decades without the same international recognition as Barossa or Yarra Valley.

Vineyards and cellar
Organic farming across the estate means no synthetic herbicides, pesticides, or fertilisers. In a cool-climate vineyard, that approach tends to produce lower yields and more even ripening across a parcel, which shows up as concentration in the fruit and definition in the aromatics.
The cellar philosophy is light-touch: the aim is to preserve aromatic and flavour purity from the fruit rather than to build texture or complexity through winemaking intervention. The Riesling goes to bottle with its lemon-pith acidity intact, the Shiraz keeps its spice register and its fine-grained tannin without heavy oak cover, and the Cabernet retains the violet and mint lift on the mid-palate that cooler sites make possible.

The range in view
Isolation Ridge Riesling. The leading wine and the estate's clearest single-parcel argument. Aromatically it runs to lemon pith and lemon blossom, bright and citrus-forward from the first pour. The palate is fine in texture but not light: concentration builds through the mid-palate, and the acidity is penetrating rather than gentle, driving through to a long mineral finish. It is dry, high-acid, and built for the table and for time in the cellar.
Estate Shiraz. Cool-climate Shiraz from the Great Southern reads differently from the full-bodied, warmly fruited Shiraz of Barossa or McLaren Vale. The tannins here are sturdy and fine-grained, with a raspy texture and grip without heaviness. A juicy thread of acidity runs through the palate, keeping dark fruit and spice notes fresh rather than letting them sit. Pepper is part of the register.

A bottle to begin with
Start with the Isolation Ridge Riesling. It is dry, made from organically farmed Riesling on the single parcel named in the wine's name, and it carries everything the estate stands for in one bottle: cool-climate acidity, parcel-level concentration, and cellar work that adds nothing except care. From the glass it gives lemon pith and lemon blossom, bright and precise. In the mouth the texture is concentrated but fine, the acidity penetrating and long. No residual sweetness, no oak, no manipulation. It is what the vineyard and the season produced, bottled directly.
