Why it matters

The producer

Two named estates give Maison Gabriel Meffre its own vineyard holdings. Domaine de Longue Toque is the Gigondas estate acquired in 1999, while Château Grand Escalion is an estate dating to 1884 in Générac, south of Nîmes. Alongside these properties, the house operates through a négociant company.

The bottle range includes Côtes du Rhône Terra, Gigondas Sainte Catherine and Laurus Gigondas. The wines cover broad Rhône appellations and named Gigondas bottlings, with red and white Côtes du Rhône Terra alongside the red Gigondas wines.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

The Longue Toque vineyard carries five appellations across 47 hectares: Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Cairanne, Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu and Côtes du Rhône red and white. An appellation is a regulated place name that controls how the wine is labelled, so these names divide the estate's production into distinct regional categories.

Gigondas appears in both the estate holdings and the bottle range. Côtes du Rhône gives the house a broader appellation level, while Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu names a more specific place within the Rhône Valley.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Côtes du Rhône Terra 2024 ages in French barrels with different levels of wood toasting. Toasting heats the inside of the barrel before use, and varying that treatment can add complexity, support freshness and reinforce black fruit notes.

The estate's farming history also includes 20 years in Terra Vitis before Domaine de Longue Toque received organic certification in 2020. Terra Vitis is a sustainable viticulture programme, while organic certification sets a separate farming standard.

Wines to know

The range in view

The bottles divide between Côtes du Rhône and Gigondas. Côtes du Rhône Terra appears as both red and white wine from the 2024 vintage. Gigondas Sainte Catherine is a red Gigondas from 2021, while Laurus Gigondas is a red Gigondas from 2018.

Domaine de Longue Toque's five appellations place those bottles within a wider estate range. The labels move from Côtes du Rhône to Côtes du Rhône Villages Plan de Dieu, Cairanne, Vacqueyras and Gigondas, with the two Gigondas wines occupying the named appellation tier.
