Why it matters
The producer
Derek Mossman Knapp came to Chile from Canada and went looking for old vineyards in rural communities that had mostly been written off. Garage Wine Co. is the result, based in San Javier in the Maule Valley, working old Carignan, País, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Sémillon parcels across Maule and the neighbouring Itata Valley.
The name is not a marketing decision. The operation started at garage scale and has held that working philosophy: small tanks, manual punch-down, native yeasts, basket press. Where other producers reduced costs through mechanization, Knapp invested in labour and time. The cellar runs on continuous small-batch experimentation, dozens of trials comparing incremental changes, and a commitment to learning over throughput.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Maule Valley sits south of the Rapel and Colchagua regions, far enough from Santiago that it spent decades supplying bulk wine to the Chilean domestic market. The old vines that Garage Wine Co. works are partly a legacy of that history: parcels that survived because nobody pulled them up when industrial replanting was happening elsewhere.
VIGNO is the designation that matters on the Carignan bottles. It is a Maule Valley collective requiring old-vine Carignan, minimum vine age of 35 years, and dry farming. That last condition is significant in a region where irrigation is standard: old dry-farmed vines dig deeper and yield less, producing smaller, more concentrated fruit. The VIGNO designation on a label signals those conditions and separates the wine from generic Chilean Carignan made from younger plantings.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
All the wines are made by hand. Native yeasts drive the fermentation, which means the process is slower and less predictable than a commercial-yeast program but more directly tied to the character of each parcel. Manual punch-down works the cap without mechanical extraction. A small basket press handles the pressing; it applies gentle, even pressure, preserving fine tannin and limiting harsh extraction.
The cellar approach is built around comparison: small batches separated by parcel, grape, or treatment, tasted against each other to identify what changes and what improves. This is labour-intensive and not cost-efficient by industrial standards. Knapp chose it deliberately, investing in the learning rather than the throughput. The result across the range is wines with fine tannin, pronounced acidity, and an ash-and-herb aromatic thread that suggests old-vine fruit and careful, low-intervention cellar work.

The range in view
Carignan is the axis. The VIGNO Carignan Valle de Maule carries the flagship designation, and the 2020 vintage earned 95 points from James Suckling with full-bodied, juicy, and expansive mid-palate character. The Cariñena Empedrado, a single-vineyard Carignan, reached 97 points. The Cariñena Field Blend Cru sits alongside those single-variety bottlings: the 2022 shows red fruit, herbs, ash, raspberry, and pomegranate on the nose, with a silky and agile palate driven by elevated acidity.
Cabernet Franc appears under the Las Higueras label. The 2022 opens with ash, herbs, and mint, the pyrazines staying subtle behind cassis; it is dry, juicy, and finely textured, and scored 95 points from James Suckling. Cabernet Sauvignon is bottled as Renacido, the 2022 showing redcurrant, blackberry, and raspberry with ash underneath; that bottling also earned 95 points.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
The Carignan Valle de Maule VIGNO is the right starting point. It is 100% old-vine Carignan from dry-farmed Maule parcels, made under the collective's rules and by Garage Wine Co.'s hand-production methods: native yeasts, basket press, manual punch-down. The 2020 earned 95 points from James Suckling and shows what the combination produces: a full-bodied wine with a juicy, expansive mid-palate, the old-vine concentration visible in the breadth rather than in hardness or extraction. The ash-and-herb character that defines the house style is present but the Carignan fruit carries enough weight to hold it in balance. Start here to understand both what Maule old-vine Carignan can do and what Knapp's cellar decisions add to it.
