Why it matters
The producer
Benjamin Morris completed a Master of Applied Science in Oenology at Lincoln University in New Zealand, specialising in the production of organic wines with minimal preservatives. That research question became the working philosophy of the winery he founded with his wife Frida Gårdö Morris in 2006. The two run Gardo & Morris as a family operation: Benjamin makes the wines in New Zealand each harvest season, and the couple also acts as importer and distributor, supplying a selection of Swedish restaurants and state monopoly stores.
The range spans Marlborough and Central Otago, two regions with markedly different climates and soil characters, both expressed primarily through Pinot Noir.

Where the wines begin
Marlborough sits at the northern tip of New Zealand's South Island, where long hours of sunshine and cool nights from Cook Strait give Pinot Noir bright red-fruit aromatics and lively acidity. Central Otago lies further south and inland, at high altitude. The continental climate there, with cold winters and warm summer days that drop sharply at night, pushes Pinot Noir toward darker fruit, more concentrated tannin, and a smoky, earthy character that Marlborough rarely produces.
For Gardo & Morris, those two climates are the main argument. The same grape, the same winemaker, two completely different wines.

Gardo & Morris is a small family winery on the South Island, drawing fruit from Marlborough and Central Otago. The minimal-preservative approach that shaped Benjamin's graduate research carries through to the finished wines: the goal is to intervene as little as possible while letting the fruit and site express themselves clearly.
The range includes still Pinot Noir from both regions, an organic Rosé, organic Sauvignon Blanc, organic Reserve Chardonnay, a Reserve Syrah, and sparkling wines including a Brut Sauvignon Blanc and a Blanc de Blancs. The organic designation across several labels reflects the winery's founding philosophy applied to both viticulture and cellar work.

The range in view
The two Pinot Noirs from different South Island regions form the spine of the range. The Marlborough Pinot Noir is the more accessible of the two: medium-bodied, with red and dark fruit, supple tannins, and a lacy acidity that keeps the palate fresh. The Central Otago Reserve Pinot Noir moves into darker territory, with more concentration, firmer tannins, and a smoky, earthy depth that reflects the inland altitude and the more extreme diurnal swing of that region.
Beyond the reds, the Organic Rosé from Marlborough offers a still Pinot Noir rosé made with the same minimal-preservative approach. The white wines include an Organic Sauvignon Blanc and an Organic Reserve Chardonnay, alongside sparkling wines produced as Brut Sauvignon Blanc, Blanc de Blancs, and a Brut Rosé.

A bottle to begin with
The Central Otago Reserve Pinot Noir 2020 is the bottle that shows what Gardo & Morris is building toward. It comes from the more demanding of the two regions in the range: high-altitude, continental, with the cold nights and warm days that push Pinot Noir into darker, denser territory. The wine gives black cherry, plum, smoke, thyme, and peppery spice, held together by lively acidity and fine-grained tannins with an earthy thread through the finish. It is a firmer, darker wine than the Marlborough, and it rewards a little time in the glass.
