Genium Celler, SL

Six Poboleda families built a shared cellar in 2002 to bottle the Priorat they had always grown. Winemaker Roser Amorós ferments eight plots of Garnacha and Cariñena separately on llicorella schist, then blends by vintage assessment.

Why it matters

The producer

Six wine-growing families from the Priorat village of Poboleda had farmed the same fractured dark schist for generations before anyone bottled under a shared name. In 2002 they stopped selling fruit and built a winery together. The name they chose, Genium, carries the Latin sense of collective spirit. The arrangement has not changed: winemaker Roser Amorós oversees the cellar, plots are fermented separately, and the blends are assembled only after each plot's character is assessed for that vintage.

Poboleda sits inside DOQ Priorat, one of only two appellations in Spain to hold the Denominació d'Origen Qualificada designation, the tier above DOC. A significant share of Genium's output carries organic certification from the Catalan Council for Organic Production (CCPAE). The oldest vines on the estate date to 1910; younger parcels from the 1970s and 1980s bring further variation in root depth and concentration. Eight vineyard plots spread across three zones within the appellation give Amorós a wider range of elevations, aspects, and vine ages than a single-site producer would have.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Priorat occupies an inland pocket of the Tarragona province, cut off from the coast by low ridges and exposed to a climate that is Mediterranean in summer heat but tempered by altitude. Genium's parcels sit between 400 and 600 metres, high enough for cool nights that slow ripening and preserve acidity in Garnacha and Cariñena through the long growing season.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Garnacha and Cariñena are farmed across eight plots in three Priorat zones. Vine ages range from pre-1910 stock through 1970s and 1980s plantings, giving Amorós access to different levels of concentration and yield within the same appellation.

Fermentation takes place in wide-diameter stainless steel tanks ranging from 500 to 3,000 litres. The wide diameter is a deliberate design choice: it increases the ratio of grape skin to liquid during maceration, drawing more aromatic compound from the fruit before alcoholic fermentation converts sugars. A cold soak precedes fermentation to extract colour and aroma gently before heat and alcohol accelerate extraction. Basket pressing follows, a method that uses gravity and slow pressure rather than centrifugal force, keeping the pressed juice cleaner and less bitter.

Wines to know

The range in view

The Genium range runs across five named lines: Ximenis, Fusió, Poboleda, Costers, and a Ratafia. Blend compositions and ageing details for the Ximenis, Fusió, Poboleda, and Ratafia lines are not publicly confirmed beyond their Garnacha and Cariñena base, so they stand here as range markers rather than fully documented cuvées. What the range shares is the parcel-by-parcel fermentation approach and the Allier oak philosophy.

Genium Costers is the fully documented upper tier. It is a red wine built from Garnacha and Cariñena grown on llicorella schist, aged 14 months in new 225-litre Allier barrels from multiple coopers, and bottled at a depth of colour that stains the glass ruby from edge to centre. The wine carries dried cherry, vanilla, and blackberry alongside pungent herbs, with a secondary dimension of cinnamon, baking spice, and smoked stone that the schist soil brings distinctly. Red-berry fruit, licorice, and mineral length underpin the finish. International Wine Cellar awarded 93 points; Wine Enthusiast awarded 92. Both notes align on the smoky, mineral character alongside concentrated dark and dried fruit.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Genium Costers is the bottle. It is a red wine from Garnacha and Cariñena grown on llicorella at 400 to 600 metres, aged 14 months in new French Allier oak, and produced from separately fermented parcels blended only after vintage assessment. The colour is glass-staining ruby. The nose moves from dried cherry and vanilla through blackberry and pungent herb to a smoky, spiced register of cinnamon and baking spice. The palate is full-bodied with firm tannin, a schist-driven mineral line, and a long finish with licorice and smoked stone. It sits between two 90-plus point scores from Wine Enthusiast and International Wine Cellar.
