Why it matters

The producer

Jean Leon is a 65-hectare organic estate in the Penedès DO, Catalonia, built around Bordeaux varieties on land a Hollywood restaurateur could afford when Napa Valley could not. The man who founded it in 1963 was born Ceferino Carrión. By the time he came back to Spain, he had reinvented himself twice over: first as a New York cab driver, then as the owner of La Scala in Beverly Hills, whose regulars included Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, and John F. Kennedy. He had also scouted California vineyard land and turned it down on price. Penedès got the winery instead.

He planted Cabernet Sauvignon when almost no one in Spain was doing it and registered the operation under the name his Hollywood life had made: Jean Leon. The winery became the first in Spain to produce a single-variety Cabernet Sauvignon. The Torres family bought it in 1994 and kept the Bordeaux grape focus intact. Mireia Torres has led the estate as managing director since 2010.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Penedès is a DO in Catalonia, south and west of Barcelona, spread across a wide plain that rises toward the pre-Pyrenean foothills. It is warmer and drier than Burgundy or Bordeaux and has Mediterranean conditions that ripen Cabernet Sauvignon reliably. In 1963 that grape was a marginal choice in Spain, grown only in isolated plots. Jean Leon's decision to plant it as a single variety defined what the estate would be and what its labels would carry: Cabernet Sauvignon rather than the Tempranillo and Garnacha that dominated Spanish production at the time.

The Penedès DO allows international varieties alongside local ones, and Jean Leon stays firmly in the Bordeaux camp. Cabernet Sauvignon anchors the flagship single-vineyard tier. Cabernet Franc appears in Vinya Le Havre. Petit Verdot arrived in 2006 and now leads the 3055 red. Merlot and Chardonnay fill the 3055 range. The full estate runs to 65 hectares, all certified organic since the 2012 vintage.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Vinya La Scala, the 8-hectare Cabernet Sauvignon parcel from 1963, goes into 24 months of ageing in French oak barrels before spending a minimum of three years in bottle. That timeline means the wine releases with significant age on it: tannins have softened, the oak has integrated, and the fruit has had time to develop complexity beyond the primary register. La Scala opens with roundness rather than grip.

Vinya Le Havre spends a minimum of 12 months in a mix of French and American oak barrels, then a minimum of two years in bottle. The mixed cooperage introduces toasted and spicy notes alongside the Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc fruit, rather than a single-origin oak character.

Wines to know

The range in view

The range divides into two tiers with different aims.

The Single Vineyard tier covers the parcels Jean Leon planted in the founding decade. Vinya La Scala is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the 8-hectare parcel put in the ground in 1963. It spends 24 months in French oak, then at least three years in bottle before release. The wine builds depth over that ageing: dark fruit, rounded tannins, firm acidity, and a long finish. La Scala is the estate's most age-committed bottle.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Vinya Le Havre is the right first bottle. It is Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc from the 12-hectare parcel planted in 1968, aged 12 months in French and American oak and then two years in bottle. The nose is toasted and spicy from the mixed cooperage. On the palate the wine is powerful on entry, full-bodied through the mid-palate, and long on the finish. The wine is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. It is less time-committed than La Scala but still old enough to have integrated its oak and found some depth. Start here to understand what the Penedès climate does to Bordeaux varieties and what Jean Leon's cellar does with time.
