K Vintners

Charles Smith founded K Vintners in Walla Walla in 2001 with 330 cases of Syrah sold from a van. The winery makes small-lot, single-vineyard Syrah, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese from hand-picked, naturally fermented, basket-pressed fruit across the Columbia Valley and Walla Walla Valley.

Why it matters

The producer

Charles Smith arrived in Walla Walla in 1999 with $5,000 and a conviction formed on a road trip: the valley could make serious wine. Two years later he opened K Vintners, a winery built entirely around single-vineyard lots of hand-picked, naturally fermented, basket-pressed red wine. The label he put on the bottle was a giant black K on a white ground, large enough to read from the other side of a room. That directness carries through everything else. No blended house style, no compromise vineyards. Each wine traces to one named parcel, one set of choices, one result in the glass.

Smith is also the founder of several other Washington labels under the House of Smith umbrella, but K Vintners came first and remains the clearest statement of what he is after: wines that taste of where they were grown rather than how they were made.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Walla Walla Valley sits in the southeastern corner of Washington State, spilling slightly into Oregon. It is a sub-appellation of the larger Columbia Valley, though it carries its own AVA designation and a character distinct from the broader Columbia plateau. The valley floor sits at roughly 1,000 feet elevation, and the surrounding Blue Mountains catch enough moisture to moderate what is otherwise a high-desert climate: warm to hot days through summer, cold nights, and low rainfall that keeps disease pressure low and allows dry farming on some parcels.

That temperature swing between day and night is the decisive factor for the grapes K Vintners works with. Syrah accumulates ripeness through the warm days, then holds its acidity and aromatic freshness as temperatures drop after sunset. K Vintners produces Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Tempranillo, and Sangiovese, along with field blends of these grapes.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

Every wine in the K Vintners range begins with hand-picking. Picking by hand allows selection at the cluster level, which matters in a high-desert climate where a warm year can push ripeness unevenly across a vineyard block. Fruit that is hand-selected and handled carefully arrives at the cellar in better condition than mechanically harvested loads, which shows in the clarity of aroma and the absence of herbaceous off-notes even in cooler vintages.

Fermentation runs on naturally occurring yeasts, meaning the yeasts already present on grape skins and in the cellar drive the conversion of sugar to alcohol without a commercial yeast addition. This approach extends fermentation time and can produce a wider range of aromatic compounds than a single commercial yeast strain, contributing to the complexity the Motor City Kitty in particular shows on the nose.

Wines to know

The range in view

Motor City Kitty Syrah is the most historically continuous wine in the range, blended from three distinct Syrah clones to build complexity across a single bottle. It is broad and mouth-filling, full-bodied with a silky texture and a finish that carries a restrained sweetness. The three-clone blend gives the wine more aromatic range than a single-clone Syrah would produce, with the different clones contributing separately to the nose, the mid-palate density, and the length.

Royal City Syrah is 100 percent Syrah from Stoneridge Vineyard in the Royal Slope AVA and sits at the top of the K Vintners Syrah range. The single-vineyard sourcing and the AVA's higher-elevation conditions produce a wine with consistently high critical scores and a different, more aromatic expression than Motor City Kitty.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Motor City Kitty Syrah is the right first bottle. It is the wine that has run longest through the K Vintners range, and it carries the most complete version of what Smith is doing in Walla Walla in a single purchase. Three Syrah clones blended from Boushey Vineyard's Oldfield Block volcanic soils, hand-picked, naturally fermented, basket pressed. On the nose it is mineral and dark-fruited; on the palate it is broad and mouth-filling with a silky texture and a long finish that stays clean. It is full-bodied without being heavy, and the restrained sweetness means it works as well with lamb or duck as it does with a glass on its own.
