The producer
Kapcsándy Family Winery farms 15.5 acres on State Lane in Yountville, producing a small Bordeaux-variety range from a single valley-floor parcel in southern Napa Valley. The estate is built around the Grand Vin Cabernet Sauvignon, a long-aged red that has drawn consistent high scores since the first official vintage.
Lou Kapcsándy was born in Budapest in 1936 and fled Hungary during the 1956 revolution, eventually settling in Seattle where he worked as a chemical engineer. In 1999 he co-founded Grand Cru Imports, a business specialising in wines from Bordeaux, Hungary and Spain. The following year, at 64, he closed escrow on 20 acres in Yountville with his wife Bobbie and their son Louis Jr., and started building an estate from the ground up. Lou died in 2021. Louis Jr., who studied economics at the University of Washington and trained in Bordeaux before returning to run the winery, still manages the estate today.

Where the wines begin
Yountville sits in the southern portion of Napa Valley, where the valley floor is wide and the diurnal temperature swing is pronounced. Fog from San Pablo Bay pushes north through the valley on summer evenings and retreats by midday, slowing ripening and preserving acidity in a way that the warmer central and northern reaches of Napa cannot always match.
The State Lane address carries a specific history. Beringer farmed this parcel for its Private Reserve Cabernet program from 1979 through the 1990s. When the Kapcsándy family acquired it in 2000, they were buying a site already associated with high-quality red wine production, and they planted it entirely to Bordeaux varieties.

Vineyards and cellar
The red planting on State Lane is almost entirely Bordeaux varieties on Bordeaux clones. The shallow topsoil over hard clay holds just enough moisture to sustain the vines through the growing season while limiting vigour and restricting crop load, which concentrates fruit character and deepens colour and tannin in the finished wine.
In the cellar, the Grand Vin is aged in French oak, with 67 percent new barrels used for the 2017 vintage. The oak contributes to the spice and cedar notes that appear alongside the dark fruit in older vintages, but the tannin character in the finished wine is primarily from the grape and the site. No details on fermentation vessel type or maceration duration are available, and no certification status for organic or biodynamic farming has been confirmed.

The range in view
The range runs across three wines.
The Grand Vin Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship and the bottle that defines the estate. It has been 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon in at least some vintages, sourced entirely from the State Lane parcel. The aromatic register across multiple vintages centres on cassis, blackcurrant and plum at the core, with graphite, crushed rock, tobacco, lead pencil and espresso layered beneath. The 2012 added cedar, blueberry and char to that profile, the 2017 showed crushed rock and lead pencil clearly alongside the dark fruit, and the 2021 brought baked blackberry and plum preserves forward alongside tobacco and graphite. The palate is full-bodied with tannins that build across the length of the wine. These are bottles designed for cellaring: the 2021 vintage carries a projected longevity of 30 to 40 years.

Grand Vin Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2017 is a clear entry point: 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon from the State Lane parcel, aged in 67 percent new French oak. The nose carries blackcurrant, graphite, crushed rock and lead pencil shavings. The palate is full-bodied, supple, with tannins that build across the length of the wine and finish clean. It shows what the shallow clay soils produce in the glass: concentrated dark fruit with a mineral underlay and enough tannin and acidity to carry the wine comfortably into the next decade.
