Why it matters

The producer

Les Domaines Barons de Rothschild Lafite is the Bordeaux group built around Château Lafite Rothschild, the Pauillac estate whose 112 hectares are planted 70% to Cabernet Sauvignon. That grape gives the historic château its central place in the range, while Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot complete the vineyard planting. Château Lafite received First Growth, or Premier Cru, status in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The classification belongs to Château Lafite Rothschild itself, not automatically to every bottle carrying the wider DBR Lafite name.

The group extends beyond that Pauillac centre. Château Anseillan is a Haut-Médoc red with a Merlot-led blend, while Les Légendes Bordeaux Rouge and Blanc carry the broader Bordeaux appellation and use different grape proportions and cellar methods. The label therefore tells you whether you are looking at the historic château or another part of the portfolio.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Pauillac is the home appellation of Château Lafite Rothschild, and its name places the Cabernet Sauvignon-led 112-hectare vineyard at the centre of the story. Haut-Médoc places Château Anseillan in a different appellation with a 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Bordeaux Rouge and Bordeaux Blanc sit at a broader regional level, with Les Légendes Rouge divided equally between Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, and Les Légendes Blanc made from 90% Sauvignon Blanc and 10% Sémillon.

Those names change what appears in the glass. Pauillac points to Lafite's large Cabernet planting and First Growth classification. Haut-Médoc points to Anseillan's richer nose and firm tannins. The Bordeaux labels carry direct red and white expressions built around their stated blends.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

At Château Lafite, the 112-hectare planting gives Cabernet Sauvignon the largest role, with Merlot at 25%, Cabernet Franc at 3% and Petit Verdot at 2%. The proportions describe a range anchored in Cabernet, with the other grapes present in measured amounts.

Château Anseillan 2020 receives approximately 20 days of maceration before 16 months of ageing in French oak barrels sourced from Tonnelleries des Domaines in Pauillac. The maceration builds extraction, while the long barrel ageing accompanies the wine's firm tannins and its stated ageing potential.

Wines to know

The range in view

Château Lafite Rothschild is the group's Pauillac First Growth, from a vineyard planted 70% to Cabernet Sauvignon. Its place in the range comes from the château, the appellation and the 1855 classification, all of which belong to this estate rather than to the wider portfolio.

Château Anseillan 2020 is the Haut-Médoc red. Made from 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, it shows a rich, intense nose and firm tannins. Approximately 20 days of maceration and 16 months in French oak give the wine a cellar path distinct from the broader Bordeaux labels.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with Château Anseillan Haut-Médoc 2020. It is a red Bordeaux blend of 63% Merlot and 37% Cabernet Sauvignon, with a rich, intense nose and firm tannins that suggest ageing potential. Approximately 20 days of maceration build extraction, followed by 16 months in French oak barrels from Tonnelleries des Domaines in Pauillac. This one bottle connects appellation, grape proportion, cellar work and mouthfeel in a single example, making the wider group's move beyond Pauillac easy to follow.
