Why it matters
The producer
Old, often extremely challenging vineyards are where Luis Seabra looks for wines of character. Before establishing his own label, he worked as a soil researcher in Vinho Verde, an enology instructor and a winemaker in the Douro. He works with leased vineyards, while Natalia, also a winemaker, plays an essential role in the operation.
Seabra set out independently in 2012, and Luis Seabra Vinhos launched in 2013. He pursues low intervention, balanced wines with lower extraction, a complex and lively character, and the ability to age.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
The vineyard work spans three regions, the Douro, Vinho Verde and Dão. Seabra lives upriver from Porto in rural Douro, while Vinho Verde also belongs to his earlier soil research. The range narrows that regional spread to soil categories instead of conventional single vineyard names.
Xisto is schist, while Granito is another soil name used in the range. Seabra favors old, often extremely challenging vineyards when seeking wines of character. He farms organically without chemical treatments 95 percent of the time. In wine terms, a soil category names the ground under the vines, while a single vineyard names one site. Seabra uses the first system for this range.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
White wines ferment spontaneously, meaning native yeasts start the process, with little or no temperature control. Some fermentations can take three or four months to complete. New oak can add fresh wood aroma and tannin, but Seabra never uses it. Most wines receive only light fining and filtration before bottling, steps that remove suspended material and clarify the wine.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range is organized around soil types such as Granito and Xisto. Xisto Ilimitado Branco is a white Douro still wine within the Xisto part of that range. The style is low intervention and balanced, with lower extraction and the ability to age.
Xisto Ilimitado Branco brings lemon, green apple and Bosc pear, with floral tones and slate minerals. The palate is juicy and driven by mineral notes. In the 2023 vintage, pear blossom, gooseberry, green fig and lemon ran across a stony palate, with grapefruit pith tightening the middle and a long saline finish.
