Why it matters

The producer

Philibert and Audoin Lorne founded Maison Marigny with a stated wish to offer a contemporary alternative to established wine conventions. The house carries this into the bottle: labels are part of the wine experience, while the range moves from Bourgogne Gamay and Chardonnay to Pinot Noir, Vacqueyras and Crozes-Hermitage.

The house began in 2015 as the Lorne brothers’ family project in Chalon-sur-Saône. Their brief paired inherited craftsmanship with innovation, and design became part of the proposition rather than an afterthought. This is most visible in a range where a Bourgogne Chardonnay can sit beside a Rhône Syrah: the label names stay specific, and each wine has its own grape or appellation role.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Chalon-sur-Saône is Maison Marigny’s Burgundy base, but its labels travel beyond Burgundy. Liberty of Burgundy Bourgogne Gamay and Bourgogne Chardonnay place the house in Bourgogne on the label; Elégances Vacqueyras and Fragrance Crozes-Hermitage bring Rhône appellation names and different red grapes into the range. The result is a selection arranged by named wine styles rather than one single appellation.

Maison Marigny’s supplied record establishes no vineyard parcels, soils, vine ages or farming details. The useful ground-level distinction is therefore on the bottle: Pinot Noir appears in Classique Pinot Noir, while Grenache Noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre meet in the 2024 Vacqueyras, and Syrah stands alone in the 2022 Crozes-Hermitage.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The cellar information is bottle-specific. Elégances Vacqueyras 2024 is fully destemmed, then macerated for about 24 days in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks. It spends 12 months split between tank (60%) and previously used 450-litre barrels (40%) before blending, a route that keeps red fruit and tannin in view without presenting new oak as the main flavour.

Fragrance Crozes-Hermitage 2022 is another separate case: 100% Syrah, destemmed and fermented in steel for approximately 17 days. That steel-fermented Syrah belongs to its own label, not to a house-wide cellar recipe.

Wines to know

The range in view

Liberty of Burgundy provides the Bourgogne end of the range through Bourgogne Gamay and Bourgogne Chardonnay. They establish two grape-led Burgundy choices, though no tasting or cellar detail is supplied for either bottle.

Classique Pinot Noir is entirely Pinot Noir. Cherry and crushed strawberry lead the aroma, black fruit follows on the palate, and the wine is described as round and subtle, with marked Pinot Noir freshness. It is the range’s direct Pinot Noir expression: red-fruit perfume first, then darker fruit and a fresh finish.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with Classique Pinot Noir. It is 100% Pinot Noir and has the clearest supplied taste picture: cherry and crushed strawberry on the nose, black fruit on the palate, a round texture and marked freshness. That combination makes the grape readable without requiring cellar speculation, while showing how Maison Marigny places a familiar Burgundy variety inside its design-conscious range.
