Why it matters
The producer
Marqués de Riscal is a Rioja producer whose first important choice was to bottle wine under its own name. Guillermo Hurtado de Amézaga founded the estate in 1858, and the first wines left the winery in 1862. Marqués de Riscal presents that release as the first Rioja wine ever bottled.
The base is Calle Torrea 1 in Elciego, Álava, inside Rioja. Elciego supplies the historic centre, but the wines draw on a much wider Rioja Alavesa landscape. The estate also operates in Rueda, where Sauvignon Blanc gives the range a separate white-wine branch.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Rioja is the home appellation, with Marqués de Riscal's grapes coming from 1,500 hectares spread between Elciego and nearby villages including Leza, Laguardia and Villabuena. That geography places the Rioja range across several village surroundings instead of a single vineyard address, so the label carries a regional frame before a parcel name becomes central.
Rueda follows a different route. Marqués de Riscal introduced Sauvignon Blanc to the denomination in 1974, giving the estate a specific role in the region's modern white-wine history. Its Rueda holdings cover 289 hectares of estate-owned vineyards, a scale that supports a distinct operation beside the Rioja cellars.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Rioja grapes come from a large network of sites between Elciego and neighbouring villages. The poor chalky-clay terraces supply the acid and tannin shape associated with ageing, while the cellar holds the wines through barrel ageing and bottle storage before release.
Rueda has its own farming logic. All Marqués de Riscal-owned vineyards there received organic certification in 2018. The stated approach avoids fungicides, uses low levels of sulphur dioxide and encourages spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Organic farming also encourages deeper rooting and access to water and nutrients, helping the vines face drought and other weather events.

The range in view
The range divides into two regional branches. Rioja holds the historic centre, with wines from the Elciego area and surrounding Rioja Alavesa villages.
Barón de Chirel began production in 1986 and belongs to the estate's premium Rioja story. The wine is presented as an early example of Rioja's New Style era, while El Palomar now houses production of premium wines. Finca Torrea and Gran Reserva 150 Aniversario are also named within the range, but their individual grape blends and vineyard sources remain unstated here.

A bottle to begin with
Marqués de Riscal Rioja Reserva 2021 is the first bottle to open. It carries the producer's historic Rioja name in a defined Reserva release, while its taste is concrete enough to follow: dark cherry, prune, dill, vanilla, cedar, cocoa, spice and oak.
