The producer
The Donaldsons had worked in New Zealand wine from the early 1970s before founding Pegasus Bay, and the estate remains entirely family-owned. Seven family members hold key roles, including all four Donaldson sons; Paul Donaldson is general manager. That continuity keeps the home vineyard and its wines at the centre of the business rather than treating Waipara fruit as an interchangeable supply.
Pegasus Bay grew from a family already involved in pioneering local grape growing and winemaking, not from a later purchase of a finished estate. The Donaldsons’ early-1970s wine work became a Waipara vineyard in 1985, and the family still occupies the roles that carry grapes through to bottle. Pinot Noir and Riesling therefore connect the present estate to the same planted ground, family ownership and long-running local work.
Place and vineyards
Where the wines begin
Waipara Valley lies in North Canterbury on New Zealand’s South Island. Pegasus Bay’s site combines warm days with some of the valley’s coolest nights, extending ripening while retaining natural acidity. In the 2015 Riesling, that long season and cool-night acidity support an off-dry palate without turning the finish heavy; on the 2014 Aged Release Pinot Noir label, Waipara Valley and North Canterbury locate the wine before the cork is pulled.
The home vineyard was planted in 1985 on Glasnevin Gravels: weathered stones and mineral-rich gravels deposited from the Southern Alps by an ice-age glacier. Their free drainage and low vigour curb the vines’ output, producing very low yields, loose clusters and small berries. For Pinot Noir, reduced crop levels and full ripeness supplied concentrated fruit; for Riesling, the stony ground and prolonged ripening sit behind its mineral edge and crisp acidity.

For the 2015 Pinot Noir, blocks were picked at different maturities so the cellar could work with a range of red- and dark-fruit profiles. About a quarter of the fruit entered the vats as whole bunches, while the rest was destemmed with as many whole berries retained as possible. Cool pre-fermentation handling drew soft, silky tannin from the skins; gentle plunging and a post-fermentation steep added further tannin and depth.
The Pinot then spent 22 months in oak barriques, 40% new, before batches from different plots and clones were blended. Oak ageing and the separate lots do not turn the wine into a generic barrel-aged red: they provide structure around raspberry, pomegranate and cherry fruit, with pepper, clove, game and black-olive savoury notes. The 2015 Riesling followed a different route—gentle pressing and slow, cool fermentation—so its fruit remains bright and its acidity stays active.

The range in view
Riesling and Pinot Noir show two distinct uses of the Waipara site. The 2015 Riesling is off-dry, with body and concentration balanced by crisp acidity, a mineral seam and a small retained carbon-dioxide prickle when first poured. Mandarin, lime and nectarine meet mango, lychee, guava and passionfruit, making a white wine that moves from citrus to tropical fruit without losing lift.
The 2015 Pinot Noir brings parcel and clone handling into a red with concentrated fruit, fine-grained tannin and lasting savoury detail. Its 22 months in barrique add oak-backed structure rather than a simple vanilla overlay. The 2014 Aged Release Pinot Noir is a separate proposition: it was released with bottle development already underway and opened progressively in the glass, with further development projected over three to five years.

A bottle to begin with
Start with Pegasus Bay Riesling 2015. It puts the vineyard’s cool nights, mineral-rich gravels and long ripening season into a concrete glass of wine: bright citrus and stone fruit, tropical fruit behind it, a little spritz at the outset, firm acidity and an off-dry finish. Slow, cool fermentation preserves the fruit while the retained carbon dioxide adds crispness, so this is not a sweet, soft Riesling. It is a full-bodied white whose sugar, acidity and mineral texture stay in active balance.
