The producer
Piedrasassi grows and vinifies Syrah alongside grain in California’s Central Coast. Moorman has made wine in the region for more than two decades, and that long local practice shows in a range arranged around named places: Santa Barbara County, Sta. Rita Hills, Bien Nacido and Rim Rock each direct Syrah toward a different bottle.
Sorongon’s grain work makes the agricultural frame wider than vineyards alone. Heritage grain is milled and baked in a wood-fired oven, so wine and bread leave the same operation as two products of cultivated land rather than unrelated sidelines.

Piedrasassi’s vineyard sources run from Ballard Canyon through the Sta. Rita Hills to Arroyo Grande. That spread matters because Syrah from each source is bottled as a separate expression: the 2021 Santa Barbara County wine was presented as easygoing, the Sta. Rita Hills wine as wilder, Bien Nacido as old-vine-focused and Rim Rock as floral.
Santa Barbara County on the PS label identifies a broader regional blend of Syrah sources, while Sta. Rita Hills, Bien Nacido and Rim Rock narrow the focus to particular place names in the range. The consequence is practical: a Piedrasassi label is not merely a different cuvée name, but a clue to the fruit profile and structural direction intended for that wine.

Vineyards and cellar
Piedrasassi picks earlier than many peers to keep alcohol in balance with flavour and preserve the grape’s natural acidity. In Syrah, that harvest decision supports a fresher line through dark fruit and keeps the palate from relying on sheer weight alone.
Fermentation uses native vineyard yeasts, without additives or temperature manipulation. The wines are then raised in 500-litre barrels, a format described as limiting both oxygen exposure and overt oak character. Together, those choices leave room for berry fruit, acidity, tannin and site differences to remain legible in the glass.

The range in view
The 2021 range set out four Syrah expressions. Santa Barbara County was the easygoing wine: the broadest regional frame, suited to a direct expression of Syrah fruit and freshness. Sta. Rita Hills was described as wilder, pointing toward a more untamed aromatic and structural register rather than a duplicate of the county blend.
Bien Nacido puts old vines at the centre of the label, while Rim Rock is the floral expression. Across the range, the common thread is Syrah’s dark-fruit, savoury and pepper-ready vocabulary, but each source changes the emphasis: one bottle may foreground berry fruit and drinkability, another floral lift, another old-vine concentration.

Start with the 2021 PS Syrah. It is 100% Syrah and sits under the Santa Barbara County designation, making it the range’s broad regional expression rather than a single named-site bottling. The wine brings black and candied berry fruit, a medium-bodied to dense palate depending on the critical reading, natural acidity and a chalky dry finish.
