Why it matters

The producer

In 1994, the Gaja family did something they had not done in 135 years: they left the Langhe. The purchase of Pieve Santa Restituta, a Brunello di Montalcino estate in Montalcino, was their first move outside Barbaresco and Barolo, the two Piedmontese appellations where the family had built everything since 1859. The estate they bought produces exclusively Sangiovese under the Brunello di Montalcino appellation, a 100 percent Sangiovese designation with strict ageing requirements before release. The range runs three wines: a multi-vineyard Brunello di Montalcino drawn from across the estate, and two site-specific expressions, Rennina and Sugarille, each coming from a single parcel.

Roberto Bellini had founded the estate in 1974 and put the first wine under the Pieve Santa Restituta label that same year. The Gaja family's first vintage followed in 1995. Since then, the vineyards have been redeveloped to reflect the farming approach Gaja applies in the Langhe.

Place and vineyards

Where the wines begin

Montalcino is a hill town in the Province of Siena in southern Tuscany. The Brunello di Montalcino appellation covers vineyards on the slopes and plateau around the town; the wines must be made from 100 percent Sangiovese and aged for a minimum period before release, producing some of the longest-lived red wines in Italy.

The Pieve Santa Restituta estate sits at 1,050 to 1,150 feet above sea level on slopes facing south and southwest. That aspect gives the vines maximum sun exposure through the growing season, which supports the full ripeness Sangiovese needs to produce Brunello at this altitude. The elevation keeps nights cool enough to preserve the acidity that holds a Brunello together over long ageing.

In the cellar

Vineyards and cellar

The estate has 86 acres under vine on south and southwest facing slopes between 1,050 and 1,150 feet. Since 1994, the vineyards have been replanted and retrained to align with the farming philosophy the Gaja family applies across their estates. The specifics of the current farming regime, including harvest method, cover cropping, and any certification, have not been confirmed and are not asserted here.

Similarly, detailed cellar practice, including fermentation vessel, maceration length, oak format, and maturation period, is not confirmed in the verified record. What is confirmed: the range is organised so that the multi-vineyard Brunello draws from across the estate's parcels, while Rennina and Sugarille each come from a single identified vineyard.

Wines to know

The range in view

All three wines in the range are Brunello di Montalcino, meaning all three are made from Sangiovese Grosso, the grape known locally as Brunello. The appellation does not permit other varieties.

The Brunello di Montalcino is the estate blend, assembled from multiple parcels across the 86 acres. It serves as the reference wine for the property and reflects the full spread of the estate's south-facing ground.

A useful way in

A bottle to begin with

Start with Sugarille. It is a site-specific Brunello di Montalcino from a single parcel on the Pieve Santa Restituta estate, made from Sangiovese Grosso, and it is the wine in the range with the clearest documented character: dark ripe fruit, petrichor, freshness, silky tannins, and a juicy savory finish. It shows Sangiovese at this elevation doing what the grape and the appellation are built for, ripeness held in check by altitude and aspect, tannin present but not harsh, and a savory quality on the finish that marks good Brunello across its life. Opening with Sugarille gives a direct read on what the Gaja family has developed at this address in Montalcino.
