The producer
Rust en Vrede is a red-wine estate whose modern work began with restoration. Jannie and Ellen Engelbrecht acquired the long-dormant property in 1977, replanted Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot, and made the first modern-era vintage in 1978. Those three grapes still determine the bottles: Cabernet brings cassis, tannin and frame; Syrah contributes dark fruit, violet and spice; Merlot rounds out the Estate blend.
Jean Engelbrecht is proprietor, while Danielle le Roux became winemaker in 2022. The Cape Dutch buildings, dating from 1780, remain part of the working estate. Their National Monument status sits alongside a very practical focus: growing red grapes on the Helderberg and turning them into wines with dark fruit, oak, acidity and lasting grip.

Where the wines begin
The estate lies south of Stellenbosch on the lower Helderberg slopes, close enough to False Bay to place it within the Cape’s coastal geography but sheltered by mountain and foothill. That shelter creates a warmer Helderberg pocket, a setting that supports the estate’s concentration on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah rather than a broad mix of varieties.
Most vineyards face north, with smaller northeast- and northwest-facing sections. The exposure brings sun to the red varieties, while the elevation of 85–130 metres keeps the site on the lower part of the slopes. In the glass, that combination appears as ripe black fruit held by acidity and tannin rather than a light-bodied red profile.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
The vines are vertically trellised, hand pruned and hand harvested. Seasonal cover crops are rotated through the rows, then used as green mulch; compost tea is delivered through drip irrigation. These choices keep plant material and soil activity in the vineyard, while the estate also conserves 12 hectares of natural habitat.
In the cellar, primary fermentation lasts seven days, followed by 21 days of extended maceration on the skins. That skin time draws colour and tannin into Cabernet and Syrah before oak ageing shapes the wines further. Cabernet is aged in 300-litre French-oak barrels and Syrah in 500-litre barrels; the difference gives the two grapes distinct oak contact while keeping their fruit and tannin at the centre.

The range in view
The range has three clear expressions of the replanting. Rust en Vrede Estate 2022 is the blended wine: Cabernet-led, with Syrah and Merlot, 18 months in French oak and 20% new barrels. Mulberry, blackberry and cassis sit with dried herbs, mocha and graphite; the palate has balanced acidity and fine tannins beneath the ripe fruit.
Estate Vineyards Syrah 2022 isolates the darker, more savoury side of the site. It is 100% Syrah, aged for 18 months in 500-litre French-oak barrels, 16% new and 84% seasoned. Black cherry, blueberry, violet, leather, sandalwood, black pepper, cinnamon and cured meat give it a broad aromatic range, while ripe tannin keeps the fruit from becoming loose.

A bottle to begin with
Choose Rust en Vrede Estate 2022 first. Its 69% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Syrah and 7% Merlot echo the grapes replanted after 1977, so one bottle brings together the estate’s central planting decision. Eighteen months in French oak, including 20% new barrels, adds mocha to blackberry and cassis; dried herbs and graphite give the nose a darker edge. The body is built around ripe fruit, balanced acidity and fine tannin, making it a useful way into both the Cabernet frame and Syrah’s darker fruit.
