The producer
Schug dates its founding to 1980, while Walter Schug launched the Schug Carneros Estate brand in 1983 after leaving Joseph Phelps. His route to Carneros ran from a viticulture and enology degree at Geisenheim University to California in 1959, then to the inaugural Insignia bottling at Phelps. Pinot Noir and Chardonnay became the estate’s focus because Carneros offered the cooler growing conditions those grapes need to keep flavour alongside acidity.
Johannes Scheid now makes the wines. Raised at a small Mosel Valley family winery, he joined Schug as assistant winemaker in 2016 and works within the producer’s European-style approach to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. His task links the estate’s German wine background to Carneros fruit, keeping the range focused on aroma, texture and a fresh finish.

Where the wines begin
Carneros straddles Sonoma and Napa, and Schug’s estate lies on its Sonoma side, at the western edge of the appellation. The vineyard sits at the foot of a high ridge, while nearby San Pablo Bay cools the area. That combination slows ripening: Pinot Noir can develop ripe fruit without losing acidity, and Chardonnay can build body while retaining lift through the finish.
The estate’s rocky soils and strong afternoon winds are central to Schug’s fruit profile. Wind reduces the size of the berries, concentrating aroma and flavour; rocky ground and the ridge-foot setting add another check on vigour. The result is fruit with more flavour packed into each berry, useful for Pinot Noir’s perfume and Chardonnay’s layered texture.

Schug draws on its estate vineyard as well as nearby sites, including El Novillero, which sits beside the estate and close to San Pablo Bay, and Kiser Vineyard. The site mix gives the winery Carneros fruit from adjacent but distinct settings: bay influence supports a cooler feel, while Kiser’s slope and drainage offer a different ripening pattern. That variation can shape the fruit used across Pinot Noir and Chardonnay without changing the producer’s central focus.
In the cellar, Scheid’s stated remit is to preserve Schug’s European-style, place-focused work with Pinot Noir and Chardonnay while adding modern touches. The supported thread is not a recipe of barrels or tanks, but a stylistic aim: Carneros fruit should arrive with aroma, acidity and texture intact enough for each grape to remain recognisable.
