The producer
The cooperative took the name Sieur d’Arques in the 1990s, recalling a local figure associated with a fondness for Blanquette. Today, under president Pierre-Louis Farges, it reports 6,205,000 bottles of sparkling wine and 3,187,000 bottles of still wine. Those figures explain why Limoux appears here through several grapes, appellations and bottle styles, with sparkling wine at the centre of the cellar’s output.
The estate began in 1946, when local growers formed the Société des Producteurs de Blanquette de Limoux around a wine already rooted in Limoux. Renaming the cooperative Sieur d’Arques in the 1990s tied its bottles to the local Blanquette story while retaining the collective structure. That structure now carries both sparkling and still wine: the historic name is not limited to one old-fashioned cuvée, but runs through a large range built from Limoux fruit.

Where the wines begin
Limoux is the setting for both the historic Mauzac connection and the Chardonnay-based Crémant de Limoux made by the traditional method. Mauzac belongs to Blanquette de Limoux’s local vocabulary; Chardonnay has a different role in Crémant, where bottle fermentation and time on lees shape the mousse and dry structure. The appellation name on the label therefore points toward a style as well as a place.
Sieur d’Arques works land described as Mediterranean, Oceanic, Autan and Upper Valley terroirs. The four names matter because the cooperative gathers fruit from more than one climatic and geographical setting; a bottle is assembled from a wider Limoux landscape, not presented as the result of one slope. The site story is consequently clearest in the contrast between the regional Mauzac tradition and Chardonnay’s place in Crémant.

Vineyards and cellar
White varieties dominate the vineyards, with Mauzac historically associated with Blanquette de Limoux and Chardonnay important across the sparkling range. The producer’s current profile also refers to parcel selection, a necessary step when fruit arrives from four terroir areas and must be directed toward different bottle styles. In the cellar, the traditional method is documented for Crémant de Limoux and for Grand Cuvée 1531 Rosé: fermentation in bottle and lees ageing create mousse and add texture beyond simple fruit.
Wines to know
The range in view
The range begins with the two key regional languages. Blanquette de Limoux brings Mauzac into the picture, while Crémant de Limoux is predominantly Chardonnay and made by the traditional method. Alongside those sparkling wines sits a substantial still-wine production, so the cooperative is not confined to bubbles.
Grand Cuvée 1531 Rosé NV shows the more cellar-shaped side of the sparkling range. It is traditional-method rosé with documented lees ageing, which places creamy texture and mousse alongside its fruit rather than treating rosé as merely a colour. Le Propriétaire Doux moves in the opposite direction: a 2015 sweet sparkling wine from Limoux at 6% alcohol, where sweetness is part of the bottle’s purpose and the lighter alcohol changes its weight on the palate.
