The producer
The Delta Wine Company Ltd started in 2000, when three wine-industry veterans set out to make specialist Marlborough Pinot Noir. Their original Southern Valleys vineyard was planted with Dijon Pinot Noir clones, a choice that put a red grape at the centre of a region widely associated with white wine. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Gris followed, while Merlot later brought Hawke’s Bay into the range. Delta’s stated aim is to let vineyard character lead, so the useful question on each label is not simply grape variety but where that grape was grown.

Where the wines begin
Marlborough supplies Delta’s founding Pinot Noir and its Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. The Southern Valleys are the Pinot Noir home: elevation, sunshine, warm days, cool nights and ventilation slow the rush toward ripeness, helping red fruit keep an acid line and tannin shape. Dillon’s Point, in the Lower Wairau, supplies Sauvignon Blanc from a separate Marlborough setting. Its slightly cooler summer nights and nearby sea influence suit a white with citrus energy and a saline edge.
Merlot changes the geographic frame. Delta’s 2022 Merlot comes from Gimblett Gravels in Hawke’s Bay, where warmer conditions support fuller berry ripeness. The result is a darker, broader red than the Southern Valleys Pinot Noir: plum and boysenberry rather than crushed cherry, with fine tannin rather than Pinot’s more linear grip.

Delta monitors its Dillon’s Point Sauvignon Blanc until flavour, acidity and physiological ripeness are in balance. That harvest decision matters in a dry Marlborough white: picking too early can leave fruit thin, while waiting for flavour development can bring weight alongside the citrus. The 2021 single-vineyard wine shows both grapefruit and tropical fruit, with enough palate volume to carry its saline note.
For the Hawke’s Bay Merlot, selected yeast starts fermentation and the cap is hand-plunged up to eight times a day at its peak. That contact draws colour, fruit and tannin from the skins. Eight months in tanks and seasoned French oak follows before blending and bottling, so the wine’s plum and boysenberry remain in front while oak contributes texture rather than a dominant sweet-wood flavour.

The range in view
Pinot Noir is the founding thread, with Hatters Hill providing the most detailed view of the house’s Southern Valleys work. The 2021 carries black raspberry, crushed cherry and plum, then earth, gravel, clove and smoke. Fine, abundant tannin and bright acidity make it a red built for a meal or time in bottle, with a stated window from 2024 to 2029 and beyond.
The Marlborough whites take different forms. Delta Estate Sauvignon Blanc from Dillon’s Point is a single-vineyard wine with citrus, tropical fruit and saline character. Hatters Hill Chardonnay 2021 moves toward white orchard fruit, apple, citrus and flint, with more mid-palate weight, acidity and fine tannin. Pinot Gris is part of Delta’s later expansion, while Rosé, Méthode Traditionelle and Pinot Blanc appear in the current collection.

A bottle to begin with
Hatters Hill Pinot Noir 2021 is the first bottle to seek out. It joins Delta’s founding grape, Southern Valleys site and Dijon-clone planting in one wine, while showing why the project started with Pinot Noir rather than treating it as an add-on. Expect black raspberry, cherry and plum with earth, gravel, clove and smoke; bright acidity keeps the fruit lifted, and fine, abundant tannin leaves a dry, persistent finish. It has the structure for food and further bottle age, with a stated drinking window from 2024 through 2029 and beyond.
