The producer
Giles Cooke MW founded Thistledown in 2010 with one specific argument: that South Australian Grenache could be textural and finely drawn, not merely warm and generous. Cooke works as a grower-partnership négociant, sourcing old dry-grown bush-vine fruit from a handful of carefully chosen sites across McLaren Vale and Eden Valley rather than farming a single estate. The range is built around three distinct Grenache addresses, each appearing on the label as a named wine tied to a named vineyard or sub-region. White wines from Grenache Blanc, Roussanne and Chardonnay round out a tight portfolio of around 10,000 dozen a year.
In 2024, the single-vineyard Clarendon Grenache called This Charming Man won Wine of the Year, Red Wine of the Year and Grenache of the Year at the Halliday Wine Companion awards. Three awards in one cycle, for a house barely fourteen years old and working outside the traditional estate model, made the result difficult to overlook.

Where the wines begin
Thistledown draws from two distinct South Australian geographies, and that split shapes the label architecture directly.
McLaren Vale sits south of Adelaide, a warm maritime region where Grenache has grown for over a century. Within it, Blewitt Springs occupies the north-eastern corner of the appellation, sitting on deep sandy soils over ironstone that drain fast and force vines to work for water. The fruit from these parcels tends toward crunchy red character and firm tannin. Clarendon lies on the elevated eastern edge of McLaren Vale, where altitude and aspect bring cooler temperatures than the valley floor, and Grenache ripens with more black-fruit weight and grip.

Vineyards and cellar
All red vineyard sites are dry-grown and bush-trained, meaning no irrigation and no trellis. Bush-trained vines regulate their own canopy and are managed entirely by hand. Dry-growing in South Australia's warm summers limits yield by design; vines under water stress produce fewer, smaller berries with higher skin-to-juice ratios, which translates directly into more concentrated fruit and firmer tannin in the wine.
Growers are selected for their commitment to low yields and sustainable practices, and each site in the source network holds SWA certification. The grower-partnership model means Thistledown does not control the farming decisions unilaterally, but the certification framework creates a shared floor on vineyard practice.

Grenache anchors three separate bottles, each named and tied to a specific origin.
This Charming Man comes from a single vineyard in Clarendon, on the elevated eastern margin of McLaren Vale. It is the most decorated wine in the range: muscular and dark-fruited, with black cherry, violet, warming spice and mineral running through a silky, black-fruited frame. It has more weight and aromatic depth than the other two Grenache wines.

This Charming Man, the single-vineyard Grenache from Clarendon in McLaren Vale, is the wine that draws the whole project into focus. It won Wine of the Year, Red Wine of the Year and Grenache of the Year at the Halliday Wine Companion awards in 2024, which is the external confirmation. The wine itself is the reason: black cherry and violet on the nose, warming spice through the mid-palate, and a silky, muscular frame that holds its shape through a long mineral finish. Clarendon's elevation pulls concentration and dark-fruit weight out of Grenache without making the wine hot or heavy.
