Why it matters
The producer
Vinicola Patacon was built to supply wine in volume. Ricardo and Pedro Toro Espinosa founded the business in 1982 in Lontué, a town in the Curicó Valley section of Chile's Central Valley, and grew it into the operator of Chile's largest single winery facility. For most of its life, the wine left the property in tanks, not bottles, bound for export markets that blended it into other people's labels. Three hundred hectares of vineyard across Valle Central fed that model.
The bottled range came later. Copa-Copa, Cálido Reserva, Leone El Rojo Sabroso, and El Sueño are the public face of a business whose core remains large-scale production. The wines are red blends at mid-market prices, built around Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Shiraz, and Malbec in shifting combinations. They carry sustainability certification and have reached retail shelves in Sweden through Systembolaget.

Where the wines begin
The Curicó Valley sits roughly midway down Chile's Central Valley, between the Andes to the east and the Coastal Range to the west. Lontué, where Patacon is based, lies within Curicó and shares the valley's generally warm, dry growing season, moderated by cool Pacific air moving through gaps in the coastal hills. The Valle Central designation that appears on Patacon's wines covers a broad stretch of the Central Valley and allows grapes to be drawn from vineyards across the wider region. It is a label that speaks to scale rather than to a specific terroir.
For Patacon, the place consequence is a large and varied vineyard base that supplies ripe, fruit-forward grapes suited to the approachable, generously flavored style the range targets.
In the cellar
Vineyards and cellar
Three hundred hectares of vineyard across Valle Central give Patacon a large and flexible grape supply. The range does not draw on named parcels or a documented single-estate philosophy; the vineyards function as a supply base for a production-oriented business.
In the cellar, Leone El Rojo Sabroso is oak barrel aged, which contributes the toasted oak and spice notes in its profile alongside the dark fruit from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Malbec. El Sueño is fermented and aged in stainless steel, which keeps the Syrah's fresh fruit and pepper character unobscured by wood. Cálido Reserva carries some oak influence alongside its Carmenère and Cabernet Sauvignon fruit. Copa-Copa's cellar treatment is not documented in the available sources.

The range in view
Four red blends make up the documented bottled range, each combining two or three varieties from the Valle Central vineyards.
Copa-Copa blends Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, and Carmenère. All three of Patacon's signature red grapes appear together here, making it the broadest blend in the range.
A useful way in
A bottle to begin with
El Sueño is the clearest starting point. A blend of 93% Syrah and 7% Cabernet Sauvignon aged in stainless steel, it makes no effort to soften or complicate the Syrah character with oak. The nose opens with blackberry, dark cherry, and violet; the palate adds raspberry, black pepper, and a dry herbal note on the finish. The fruit is ripe and direct, the tannin moderate, and the Cabernet Sauvignon fraction adds just enough grip without pulling the wine toward a heavier style. It is an uncomplicated, honest red that shows what warm-climate Syrah from a large Valle Central operation tastes like when the cellar steps back.
